Note to self, when starting a bike in a garage it's generally a good idea to have at least one door open and even better through ventilation. Particularly so when you have stuck some K&N type pod air filters on a SO Morini that has done a fair few miles and was probably already setup a tad rich to give good acceleration on the completely open intake elbows it was running for hill climbs. "Kippered", would be close, but a not totally combusted petrol smoked one. Having said that, it settled down to a remarkably steady idle at about 1500. Should be able to get that even lower using the Morgan mercury U-tube and tweaking the slow running mixture and throttle stops. By all accounts, once I fit the NLM ignition pickup it'll tickover like a gas engine. The filters mute the intake noise just a bit, so you can hear the valve gear ticking more than before (though opening up one slightly tight tappet won't have helped that). Possibly a bit of side play on the rockers and once it is on the road I can fiddle with the adjustable trunnions and/or shims. Throttle response is very good once warm. My I love the sound of a 72 degree V twin at highish revs and the 2:1 vestigial system doesn't do too much to subdue it. It got through the MoT OK last time with it on so fingers crossed. -- +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Pete Fisher at Home: | | Aprilia Shiver Yamaha WR250Z/Supermoto "Old Gimmer's Hillclimber" | | Gilera GFR * 2 Moto Morini 2C/375 Morini 350 "Forgotten Error" | +-------------------------------------------------------------------+
In communiqué Sometimes I wonder. It has no electric start though, so even weird Italian electrical gremlins if inadvertently left with the ignition on are ruled out. -- +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Pete Fisher at Home: | | Aprilia Shiver Yamaha WR250Z/Supermoto "Old Gimmer's Hillclimber" | | Gilera GFR * 2 Moto Morini 2C/375 Morini 350 "Forgotten Error" | +-------------------------------------------------------------------+
Particularly when the throttle cable is jammed open on a freshly re-assembled monkey bike with three semi automatic gears and no clutch. Not that I've ever been chasing a monkey bike down the road in Kensington in the middle of the night at all, you understand.
I've more sense than to even start up the GFR 125 in there. -- +-------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Pete Fisher at Home: | | Aprilia Shiver Yamaha WR250Z/Supermoto "Old Gimmer's Hillclimber" | | Gilera GFR * 2 Moto Morini 2C/375 | +-------------------------------------------------------------------+
Thankfully when I had my Ariel Leader I didn't have a garage in which to start it. It was pretty good at laying down a smokescreen out on the road. Once this obscured my view of my friend's Norton Jubilee seizing up behind me as he tried desperately to keep up at a heady 75mph. There's something rather perversely entertaining about a bike that not only smokes like a pack of Woodbines but is also pig-ugly into the bargain.
Hah, yes, I sometimes fire up the YZ in the shed. I get out with eyes streaming and throat burning. The blue haze wafts out of the door for a couple of minutes afterwards.
I think I hear it running in the back ground h ttp://ads.devicebondage.com/imagedb/7838/v/h/320/7838_3.mpg
