Do not assume that a shite old French enduro bike will have standard bits inside it. The Yamaha 250 Enduro clutch was dragging so badly that stalling was inevitable. When I opened it up I latched on to the badly notched drum as being the cause. Spent a happy hour sitting in the late October sun with a file and a glass of port removing the notches. The friction plates looked a bit worn and the driven plates a tad thin so a complete cure was expected on reassembly with new plates. Put it all back together and the improvement was non existent. Pull off the pressure plate again and look closely at the Clymer manual. Pressure plate and push rod assembly appear not to be as illustrated for either a 96 (ball between push rod and solid push piece) or a 97 (no ball but a thrust bearing (caged tiny balls). The pressure plate looked different and the push piece has a sort of built in thrust bearing. No ball fell out when I took it apart. So I guess some hard riding motard has fitted an after market 'upgrade' pressure plate which uses the thrust bearing system and dispensed with the ball. The clutch push rod ends looked a bit 'splayed' so shortened a bit. By adjusting everything up as far as it will go I did eventually manage to get a drag free clutch but a long term solution is needed. Strategies: [1] new clutch push rod [2] I think a correct sized ball would insert in to the hollow end of the push piece and take up the play (perhaps motard should have put one in - but not strictly needed in view of the thrust bearing). [3] new cable (assume old one has stretched). [4] Unsolder the nipple on the old cable and take up the slack that way. I favour [4] with the back up of [3] (will do as a spare anyway), if that is not enough [1] and if all else fails [2]. -- +-------------------------------------------------------------+ | Pete Fisher at Home: | | Voxan Roadster Gilera Nordwest Yamaha WR250Z | | Gilera GFR Moto Morini 2C/375 | +-------------------------------------------------------------+
