Not so pricey, I suppose

  1. Full overhaul on the Trophy.

    Asked Carl Rosner to re-balance the front wheel as it was hammering a
    bit over 90mph - turned out the front wheel bearings were on the way
    out, so it needed a set. A bit premature at just over 11k miles, but
    there you go. They thought it was unusual, too.

    Re-shim (5 valves out). Balance carbs, new fork oil, the usual going
    over; ukp490.

    It's made a difference too: gone is the slight fluff off idle, and it
    starts a damn sight easier too. Roll on summer.

    If only I could afford to have mine done.

    Ally Pally run today wasn't as much fun as I'd have liked

    Stripped the carbs off and plugs out today when I got home to find out what
    was causing the *REALLY* annoying stutter/misfire when accelerating in any
    gears. Intermittent and fucking irritating. In all different throttle
    positions. Heavy misfire on over run too.
    Stripping the carbs revealed mud of the first order in the float bowls, but
    curiously nowt in the fuel tank filter.
    Cleaned thoroughly the jets and stuff and checked the diaphragms for pin
    holes and all OK.
    Cleaned the plugs and chucked the lot back together. All in all around 3hrs.
    Still hesitates a little and occasional misfire so I reckon on a set of
    Split fires to see if that changes anything.

    Any ideas anyone of anything else it might be?

    If it doesn't run right on standard plugs, shitfires won't make any
    difference at all. How many miles has it done? Maybe it's a case of worn
    needles / jets / slides?

    Slight air-leak in one of the intakes?
    Sticking/tight valve?
    Cracked header?
    Blocked fuel filter?

    Miles.....36k
    Jets and slides looked fine in good strong light.
    Maybe a blocked filter at the carb end T piece according to HBoL

    Re-strip next weekend in order I reckon

    When you've got the T-piece filter out, clean it carefully with white
    spirit, blow it dry with an airline (being careful not to damage the
    guaze), then place it on a clean spot on the garage floor & stamp on it
    repeatedly whilst shouting "you pointless fucking piece of shit" at the
    top of your voice.

    When the police have gone, pop down your local motorcycle emporium &
    get an inline filter.

    Ahh, yes.. those tiny little filters. If it only appeared after a lay
    up, maybe it's got blocked emulsion tube holes, so is getting areas of
    too rich mixture through the rev range?

    Couldn't find any real gunge apart from the *mud* in the carb bowls.
    Must admit I didn't look at the HBoL until AFTER the strip out etc, so
    missed the filters (Assuming there are any).
    Got to go to Brum tomoz to the NEC by cage, so won't get a chance to examine
    more closely until next Sat. Bugger!.
    Gonna get an inline filter anyway and chuck the little fuckers out the
    window.

    Mud. Hmm.. I've had what looked like sand in the float bowl of a bike,
    never mud.
    That'll be another week gone. Have you thought of investing in some fuel
    preserver? They usually sell it where you buy lawn mowers.

  14. Carl Rosner are pretty emphatic that the valve clearances are
    responsible - apparently the Trophy is very sensitive to them, as I
    posted.

    A proper carb balance would probably also help.

    I had a load of shit in the t-piece filters on my Trophy, and the symptoms
    were mostly fuel starvation if I ran it above 85-90. Below that, it was
    fine.
