but at the moment it seems like complete carnage on the roads.

In neck of the woods (NE Scotland) it seems I can hardly pick up the
local paper and there is a story of another boy has died off his bike.

Then the local TV news did an item of all the recent deaths, full of
    film of broken bikes...

Of the last 20 road deaths in the area 10 were bikers....

and they came away with the stat that bikers are 1% of road users but
    17% of deaths.... normally.

and finished with a plod asking bikers to concentrate a bit more....

Just a bit maud tonight.... sorry.

It could be worse - you could die having never experienced riding.

That's actually *good* news for you. According to the stats you're 17
times more likely to suffer death or serious injury than a car driver.
So those 10 bikers have lowered the odds for you.

Anyway summer is over so the Sunday suicide squad will be putting their
    bikes away for the winter.

Enjoy your ride and and remember to stay shiny side up.

Actually had a fright last week with a sudden deflation of the rear tyre
whilst making progress round a corner. Don't begrudge a single penny
of the £145 replacement because it allowed me to stop safely even though
it took me about half a mile to stop. Went something like, strange I
know the join in the road is a bit dodgy but the bike doesn't normally
squirm like this. There's definitely something not right, better stop.
Oh shit look at the hole in the tyre. =

I'm always curious about biker deaths because I know some of them are
plastic fantastics doing 160mph into a hedge which IMHO is easily done.
What I'd like to know is what the other ones are. Scooter boys being
    squashed under buses I presume.
