I was involved (on the buying side) in an NHS procurement project 15
    years ago (pre-outsourcing).

It was a clusterfuck of epic proportions. I have never been so glad to
get away from a project in my life.

Given that one of the key decision making factors in the modern civil
service is "How would it look in the Daily Mail?", I would suggest we're
    already there.

  4. And I've *actually* had that said to me by someone (several someones in
    fact) at the DoH.

  5. And I'm almost pathalogically opposed to outsourcing unless done very
very well. And I've never yet seen one done well..

Admittedly my exposure to outsourcing isn't anywhere near the extent
    of others (ginge for example).

What makes you think my view of outsourcing differs all that
significantly from yours? I just accept that it pays my salary, and
    therefore, the bills.

As somebody wiser than me once said, if you can't beat them, join
    them.

Ginge was on the edge of the O2 IT outsourcing. It was driven by the
usual factors. An IT Director and executive management too incompetent
    to run it internally.

I do think companies should "do what they do well" to an extent. The PFI
model here is a perfect blueprint for the NHS. We supply and run almost
everything needed 24x7 for the next 30 years. The NHS *knows* that
everything will look, run and feel perfect no matter what govmint is in
power or who is on the Trust board. All the NHS does is put in clinical
and admin staff and treat patients.

I'm convinced it is the right model for most hospitals. People say "the
PFI is too expensive compared to our own buildings" but that is because
they fudge the figures and woefully fail to maintain everything. The
Trust unit next door will be a rotting mess in 30 years, this will still
    look new.

  8. I'm not (hugely). I'm just surprised that it seemed to be the *only*
criteria that they used. Despite the technical advice from their own IT
    people.

  9. Cos you do it for a living. Mind you - in my experience that'll just
make you loathe it even more than I do.
Much like my job. It was enjoyable to start with (the first year or
so) but now it's just another job.
