    Oops...

Talking of which, I was riding down to the coast on Friday, got to a
shortish straight & just about to overtake when a van appeared round
the bend at t'other end, closely followed by 4 police bikers who were
all completely on the wrong side of the road. No doubt they were just
doing their roadcraft positioning thang, but the driver in front of me
understandably thought they were overtaking the van, & slammed his
brakes on. Luckily I had already pulled out to overtake, so managed to
    sail past him without colliding.

I gave a very exaggerated shake of my head as I passed the coppers,
hoping they'd turn around & stop me to see what the problem was. Sadly
    they didn't.

As he seriously injured a Policeman, how good is he at falling down
    stairs?

Eh? It was at the other end of the straight. I was pretty close when it
passed me going the other way, but short of riding on the verge, I'm
not sure how you expect me to be further away.

I was giving a presentation to the Liverpool hospital trust recently.
The consultant on before me was recounting that 30% of their deaths were
down to infections contracted after admission.

  10. That, and the demise of the Matron, combined with the Nursing 2000
entrant system, whereby there were lots of paper-qualified nurses coming
in who didn't know how to keep things clean, many of whom simply lacked
the experience and/or the will to do the job properly.

Contract cleaning staff, being poorly-paid and often working for a
company that is chosen on the lowest bidder criteria don't do the job to
    the necessary standard.

One thing to be said for the Old NHS - it might have been inefficient in
terms of cash and resources but the staff quality was usually bloody
good. It had to be when there was a fire-breathing dragon breathing down
    yer neck.

I'm not sure that it was so inefficient either. In history the NHS had
a more simple job. It was dealing mainly with infectious disease / end
of life and technology was basic. Now that it's more a chronic ailment
care service dealing with an incredible variety of drug and equipment
technology so the job has become unwieldy.

I don't think the current NHS structure can possibly cope with modern
demands. Nor can UK PLC continue to fund an unlimited demand model.

  13. Perhaps a bit of bias in my source; she was a Matron. :)
