Norton Owners' Club DVD Translation

Discussion in 'Classic Motorbikes' started by Wicked Uncle Nigel, Dec 15, 2007.

  1. So I got the NOC DVD on rebuilding a Notrun gearbox.

SO far I can offer the following translations:

"These are often a bit tight" - The component in question will show
every sign of having been welded.

"We make a special tool for these, but you often need to drift them
loose" - That's because the "special tool" is made of monkey metal.
Drifting the thing will only start to succeed after heating the thing to
just short of the point where spontaneous nuclear fusion will begin.
Using a soft drift is pointless. Using a steel drift becomes a race
between the lugs shearing off completely and the component loosening.

I've given up for the night.

    Hah!

Anyway, I've chiselled the fucking thing out, and the rest of the strip
down has gone swimmingly. Even the
    bush-that's-in-a-blind-hole-and-looks-really-really-tight came out with
    lots of heat.

Now I've just got to order the bits that I need. Hmm... It seems to be
    quite a long list.

Well lore suggests it should cost at least what you paid for the bike
    shirly?

BTW there is a dealer in Somerset or somesuch selling a new. Brand New. Yam
    GTR1000!!
He wants about 8 grand for it though.

Norvil sell an overhaul kit.....which may or may not contain
    everything you need.

    Good luck...

Got that. I need a few more bits and pieces. The locking ring that the
DVD warns "may be tight" appears to have Loctite on it...

The gears are in pretty good nick, I'm replacing all the bushes and
bearings and (now) the locking ring. It wants a new clutch lifter arm as
well. There are a couple of other bits that I'll replace because they're
showing slight signs of their age.
    Cheers!

Oh yes. Both, in fact. It had a slight tendency to jump out of second
every now and again. The dogs look OK to me, so "Gawd knows". A new pair
of gears is slightly North of 130 quid, so I think I'll live with it.

I do. It's a thought. I'm rebushing the gears and shafts, and fitting
    new bearings. Maybe that'll help.
