The Palio is a horse race which is run in the 'campo' (the large
cobbled main square, tho it's not at all square). The tradition goes
back to the middle ages, and is very tied up with the history of the
town. IIRC, each locale in the town enters a horse, and the rivalry
is incredibly intense (qv the 'football' (more like rugby crossed with
tag team wrestling) match between rival parts of Florence - equally
    ancient, equally violent and serious)

There's shitloads of stuff on the web about it.

Sienna is divided into several clans/old families, dating back to the
middle ages, with rivalries at all levels of life. The Palio is a horse
race around the main square they have a couple of times a year, with
    teams from the various families:

Alex Ferrier emerged from their own little world to say
    Most likely

I went over the P St B in the third week of June. It had only been open a
day or two and sometimes does not open until July.

    www.alpineroads.com will have latest details

Right. I've seen a documentary about it at some point - just didn't
    recognise the name.

Yeah, we (Bonners Champ and myself) tried to go over the Col de l'Iseran a
few years back, in the middle of June (which Ace was refering to). Got to
within a couple of hundred meters of the col and ran into a wall of snow
deliberately left un-cleared. Had to turn tale and make our way back down
again. Still it seemed like a good idea at the time.)

  10. Ace was thinking very hard :
In Italy, almost anywhere can be recommended for eating :)

Avoid the tourist areas, eat where the Italians eat.
