I don't recall ever rubbishing any of your opinions. Please provide
the message ID where I did.

Also, some of my best friends are striaghts, alcoholics and drug
    addicts.

Don't try to hide your evangelism behind reason.

I honestly don't mean to be evangelistic.

That's me that is. Well except I steer clear of smoking areas, don't
(generally) eat sandwiches and don't talk about not smoking.

I know I'd *like* to smoke but I also know I shouldn't; and haven't for
    some time.

It's strange but I've never really noticed any physical dependency on
cigarrettes but there is a lot of habit around them.

I think for most people, including Cane, it's a thin line.

Someone needs to get Cane really, really drunk and then put a lit fag in
    his hand.

Walmart in the States are apparently (considering) introducing fitness tests
when employing people. The premis is "it's a demanding job working in a
supermarket/shop/whatever" but basically they don't want to employ fat lazy
    people :)

I personally don't see a problem with that, especially in the US.

  11. They seem to have extended their institutional distate for drivers to
Liked this bit: "These units require the very highest levels of
physical fitness and general health," added Mr Anwyl.

In my time in the army some of the fittest lads were smokers [1] and
the least fit would be least fit if they were smokers or not - they
were just lazy fuckers [2]. However an image of a wheezing copper
being outrun by a scrote does seem to come to mind!

[1] They were young, and probably in a right state now - in fact their
youth was probably the only reason they were still fit while smoking
    [2] Including me - if I hadn't left when I did I would've eventually
been booted out as my BFT (basic fitness test) time was closely
approaching the fail point every time I did it, and getting closer each
time (going over a few times, which always got me worried).

Would you agree that there are similarities?

that's not my argument - I'm saying it's not an "infringement of human
rights" to insist that applicants for a particular job are non-smokers.

    I'm a non-preachy ex-smoker. Mind you, given my wife still smokes, I
    wouldn't get away with it.

In all the years I've been smoking I could never say I've become
    dependent on them.

I would never smoke when I was on holiday from work, day off from
work, or when I was off work for any reason. I just associated
smoking with work. And even when I was at work I never "needed" a fag
ever, I would just do it to pass the time.

....Until a few weeks ago, when I started smoking at home during a
three week holiday. I did it just to fill some of the time, I quickly
noticed that I would crave for a fag, so I would go out for a walk in
the evening and have a smoke. Another night it would rain and I would
have a fag out of the window.

I conciously realised that this was a start of an addiction. It was
an odd sensation, one that I'd never felt before.
You'd certainly piss him off as a friend if you did that.
