It's this cold weather; it makes you realise what it might be like to
ride for days in the dark in sub zero temperatures.

I doubt you would get there in the winter, there are bits with snow even
    in the middle of summer.

Ferries all booked and paid for now.
If you fancy it, meet you in Oslo on the evening of February 6th.

I think I'd go via the Harwich - Hoek ferry and ride up through Sweden
rather than pay the ferry prices to Denmark then Norway on my own.

I do fancy it. Not sure why.....
What's the advantage to going via Oslo then?

Knowing Andy, it's because going through Sweden would be the sensible,
easy option. And he much prefers the difficult, idiotic option.

My initial route seems to have some piss up potential.
There's the ferry to Denmark, an evening in Frederikshaven (??) and a
    night in Oslo.
That appears to give me 10 days to get there and back....
Then do it all again on the way back.
It all looks a bit nuts to be honest. I've been driving around in a
series 3 with no heater the last two days and by **** its cold on the
    toes.

There's no point in going along the boring Swedish motorways when the
journey is the reason to go.

The only reason I said I'd go the way I posted earlier if I was on my
own is that the ferry costs are pretty high the way we've got it
planned if you're not sharing cabins. We've got everything booked with
us sharing to keep the cost reasonable.

That's the way we've got it booked.
We're simply going to go as far as we can in half the time available
then decide whether to go for it (if we haven't got as far as the
roads allow) and try to get back faster through Sweden or turn around
and return the way we came.

Common sense will probably go straight out of the window if another
day would see us at the Nordkapp but I'm hoping we'll already be there
    by the cut off point.
    Buy some warmer socks.

Well since posting I've had a look and I see what you mean.
It was a bit steep. Still, I'll have spare bed for when I'm sick in the
    other.

You camping in denmark and Oslo or getting a room together?
The plan was newer bigger bike boots but sliding about the last few days
even in work boots has me thinking of riding there in walking boots.

I'm worrying now about how much stick a 20 year old alternator can
    take.....

Did your heated visor experiments work out?

    Nope.

I've tried heated socks and didn't like them.

Ah, I didn't mean socks. Jacket and gloves.
The chemical packs Donald and I used were fantastic when placed in boots
under the toes. Not ideal for a 2 week trip admittedly.
