Maybe so, particularly if comparing with specific, rather then
generic, northern[1] pronunciations, like Yorkshire 'book' or 'look',
    pronounced 'luke'.
Ah well, therein lies a tale.

[1] BTW I'm not a northerner, at least not in the eyes (or ears) of
anyone who is. I must admit, though, to hamming up a northern accent
on occasion, just for a laugh like ;-)

Thought that was a Lancashire thing. Well that's how my rels pronounce
    it.

  4. I always thought that "correct" with regard to spoken English was
Received Pronunciation. Can't say I've ever deliberately attempted it,
though, and nor do I intend to; nowadays it just sounds silly to a
Northern prole like me. I think people should take delight in the
diversity of dialects and accents within the English family of
    languages.

I recall an phone call a few years back when the Co. Sec. of "Lucas"
phoned up to query our shareholding in his company.

Somewhat taken aback by the number I quoted him, he asked if I was
    sure.

"yes, Lucas Industries, xxx shares, or x.xx% of issue" I replied.

"No, not "Lucas". "Lookers", the car company.

    "Ah."

  11. It isn't like it where I commute every day in Wessex and the Cotswolds.
Must be you then, 'cos don't lorry drivers have a brain transplant to
remove all unwanted perturbations from their field of vision, like other
    lorries and bikes?

Which side do you expect me to argue?

I don't mind, but I don't want to start a long diatribe on the benefits of
veganism and very low calorie intake only to discover you've posted the
    exact same thing.

The protection from malaria is a result of the red corpuscle deformity,
not a second/linked phenotype. The corpuslces are not deformed as much as
in the homozygous condition, so folk don't die, but it's enough to keep
    the malaria at bay.

My Godmother was strict vegan for 60 years. She lost her eyesight
after 40, and her hair after 50. And still she stuck to her
principles. A remarkable person, in many, many ways.

    What's her bog-roll consumption like?

I only ask, cos the bro-in-law's g/f has been here a week, and has got
through SIX rolls of Andrex in seven days.

Ten sheets an hour, day in day out.

    That cannot be healthy, imo.

Was it due to the diet, the sight and hair loss?

I'd admire anyone willing to pay the price of their sight for a
principle. I might consider them misguided, but I'd admire them.
    Unless they were my children...

Her doctor thought so. Principally because when she became vegan (in
about 1930 - when even mild vegetarianism was considered odd) there
weren't the range of foodstuff available now, let alone vitamin
    supplements.

She basically lived almost all her life on vegetables and nuts and
    bread. And good sherry.
She was a deeply principled person. I'm lucky to have known, and been
influenced by her. She was quite a tory, btw; she didn't have *that*
    much influence over me.

  20. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
    Very.

A close friend of mine was a vegan for many years. After suffering from
all sorts of vague illnesses, topped off with cervical cancer, she
steadfastly refused conventional treatment, preferring all that new age
shit and may now be dead for all I know.

I loved her like a sister, but really, she was a bit stupid.
