Umm, the protection against malaria occurs as a result of the sickle
shape of the cells, so you wouldn't have the protection if you had the
    dominant phenotype.

So basically, Ginge really is black?

  4. Acherley I find it's the power ranger, Summer Only Fair-weather Tuftie,
SOFTie crew who *don't* nod/wave. In fact they almost fall off their
unsteady steeds because they just don't know how to react - if they even
notice that is. But then I left London over 40 years ago, thank
goodness, so what do I know. And praps with my third wheel and
unmatching un-leathers the miserable "in-crowd" snobs consider a third
wheel puts me beyond their pristine, pea-brained pale.

Bike's are bosh, PC's are pointless, and the 1990's are nuts!
Bikes are great, PCs are super, and the 1990s are the time to be!
Save the apostrophe! Get 'em right! If in doubt, leave 'em out!!

So why is it that when I wave to a trikist, the miserable fucks don't
wave back. Beard gets in their face and they didn't see me?

  7. They're something else, they don't count. Mind you they don't tend to
wear any face protection so they can't see you for tears and flies.

Not so. In so far as there is a "dominant phenotype" (not a term I'd
normally use) it's for "not sickle-celled". However, as with most things
it's more complex than that. In fact, it would be fair to describe the
sickle-cell and normal genes as co-dominant. Note above where it says
    "... rarely develop...".

There are very, very few genes which give a nice, straightforward
dominanat/recessive behaviour. That's one of the reasons why it has been
suspected that Mendel cheated. Either that, or he was incredibly lucky to
pick the right plant and the right characteristics.

Well, when I rode all year round, I didn't wave or nod.

IMO it's the weekend warriors who are so desperate to "belong" who
wave the most. The sappy cunts.

Not protection, just a highly reduced ability for the plasmodium to
infiltrate your blood cells. At the same point sickle cell anemia will
reduce your life span and your blood is considerably less able to
    transport oxygen.

    You participate in it though.

One problem though, as this is not a case of dominance or recessiveness,
As each gene contributes to the phenotype.

    sub-cul-chur.

    Don't forget that as a non-southerener I'd never substitute a for u in
pronoucing a word. Obvikously, all you cockney types would actually
pronounce it sab-cal-chur or some such.

I don't really know much about this, so I'm kind of hoping dog will be
    back to this thread...

That said, it seems to me that although you grubby Northerners do
pronounce some things as they're written (I'm thinking of "bath" with
an "a" rather than the "ar", etc) I'm sure there are a number of
examples where the Southern pronunciation is correct.

    Except, what is "correct"? Hmm.
