If I don't nod at bikers when I'm on a bike why would I do it in a car?

Why is it so important for you to delineate these categories? Why isn't art
that which is intended as art? And why aren't bikers those that ride on
    bikes?

    It's all tremendously simple.

There usually has to be something in common/a shared trouble etc to start
    it off though.

IT was the train service for your conversation - for other people it's the
    bike.

Just starting a conversation rarely happens.

    usually, yes.
I can see that, of course.
except maybe, at a put or some large gathering of people (demo, music
    festival or whatever).

I bought my '01 Fireblade 3rd-hand from a bloke in his early twenties
who'd put /zero/ miles on it; and the 1st owner had only put 2600
miles on it in 18 months. They're out there, and as you say, it makes
    for good 2nd-hand bargains.

Nope, they lost the Standard and upgraded to Special, but
couldn't agree on a precises term and thus omitted the
letter until the relevant commitee has had a chance to be
    formed.

come on then - how many miles in what sort of time?

Seriously though, I'm not a mileage fascist - if people only want to
use their bikes on sunny summer weekends, so what? I put a lot of the
9000 miles I've done on the 'blade in two years in the 3-4 months I
was commuting to Windsor before I got the BMW. Oh, and a 1000 of those
miles was in a weekend over to N.I. and back.

No, I mean sheepish because this will be the 4th brand new bike in as many
years, but I'm hoping I'll keep this one. I've done about 22,000 in the 4
years I've been going (obviously taking into account 6 months off for a ban
and 4 off for crash injuries).

if I had as much disposable income as you I'd probably be in the same
boat. Actually, I bought 3 brand new bikes (including 2 about 2 months
    apart) in a space of 18months in 2000/2001, so I can't really
    complain.
I've no idea how many miles I've done.

    yeah, I know - I agree completely - I've only ever owned two from-new
cars in my entire life, and unless I win the lottery or something,
    I'll stick to 18-24 month old low-mileage 2nd-owner cars.

My thoughts entirely. Motorcycling's a hobby for most people, and
hobbies are meant to be enjoyed as & when you wish. You don't hear of
people slating fishermen or windsurfers for only going out on nice
    summer weekends.

    I choose to ride all year round, but if I only had the MV, I wouldn't;
that's strictly a summer toy. If people can't afford to own/run a winter
toy, & don't want their main toy getting covered in crap, who gives a
    stuff?

That sounds like sir.tony. He used to disappear for hours.
Indeed, but for even more profit, you might want to hire them out. £50-
£90 is the going rate ATM.

But again, they're there for a similar reason.

I don't really know what my point is here, other then to sort of agree with
you.. but that said, I like going to bike meets and looking at other peoples
bikes and I quite like nodding because I can.

On other english things, BIke has an article this month (in the pillion
section I think) about the other 'English' problem of "do I overtake and
look like a knob, if I stay behind will they think I'm a prat" etc... which
is similar to the "never start a conversation" thing :)

But somehow I suspect you've never suffered from that either.
