No plate light required? Oh, and exhaust plates.

  4. Bowled over, I was.

I've seen a Rolls Royce factory in Derby but not before struggling to
think of one in Cricklewood. I really can't think of where one might
    have been.

I lived in Thamesmead at the time, so 'nuff said. I had an Alfetta that
was past its use by date, & needed a load of welding for the MoT, so
left it sat outside the flat for a few weeks then stuck it in Loot.

Someone came round to see it, but the bloody thing wouldn't start.
Cranked over fine, just wouldn't fire. I opened the bonnet to have a
looksee, & some bastard had nicked the carbs.

I think the Alfa garage was just where you come off the M40, but it's
nearly 20 years since I was last there so don't bank on it.

There are a few sites but they make the plane engines not the cars.

  10. Sounds about right.

I always used to take absolutely ages to deliver stuff with a SE
postcode in the hope they'd not send me back there again.

  12. Nightingale Road?

ICBW, I was a few years back. If you went to the top of the road and
turned right, there was a pub on the next roundabout and a park on the
right if you went in the other direction.

Hoopers do conversions to all sorts of vehicles, or at least they did. I
don't know if they still do any more.

You'd typically get a Shadow in for a hearse conversion or a 3 foot
stretch and a Mini for a luxury retrim and all manner of accessories
like electric windows and central locking etc. The firm I worked for did
all the electrical/sunroof stuff for them. My mate is originally from
Bedford, which is how I knew him before I started doing that work. He
used to do all the retrimming of seats etc on special order cars.

Sometimes a customer would buy the car from Hoopers sales office in the
West End and ask for stuff that RR themselves wouldn't or couldn't do.
Hoopers workshops in Cricklewood would do the necessary work for them
instead. In the 60s they, and Wood and Pickett, got a reputation for
doing undertaking refinements to celeb's Minis, most notably Peter
Seller's wickerwork Cooper. I used to have a thing for W+P Minis, I've
    owned 3 of them.

I've MapPointed, & the M1/A5 looks likely. But anyway...

  17. That'd be about right. Cricklewood is on the A5 about a mile south of
    the M1/A406

Fucking hell. That's a bit off. Still, they could well have been the most
/ only valuable bit on it. And this is *me* talking.

  19. I've had similar reactions with really shite machines that have been
100% legal. They tend to get more stringent MoT checks because the
testers can't believe that something so horrible can actually be road
    legal.

My favourite quote (on an old CD200 Benly) was: "I've tried to fail it
    on something, and I can't."

Aha, see that's what I thought, although a lot of posts say it isn't
    required.

You're Trafpol, aren't you? Now, I'd expect therefore that your view
would be the most definitive one.

Assuming I used the light as is, and that it passed the MoT like that,
    what's the likelihood of me:

1 - being pulled for an unlit plate
2 - pointing out it pased the MoT like that
3 - getting a rectifier or would it more likely be a FP of some sort

Or is it best just to lube up before I go out? ;-)
