There was a camera van on the A27 last Thursday, with three attendant
bikes. It seemed to have two cameras reading front number plates. That
may have been because it was a dual carriageway.

Don't know if it was a speed, tax or general bad guy one. Suspect it
wasn't for speeders.

Oh dear, too late...

I *think* it's something like ANPR (Automatic Number Plate
Registration/Reading) - reads the plate, then checks for tax and insurance,
then checks the registered driver for offences (disqualified driver, wanted
by police, etc, etc). They were doing checks in Northern Parade in
Portsmouth yesterday.

 

I suspect you may be right.

I recall a poster who 'knows these things' saying the tax marker tends to
be turned off as there are so many hits. Allowing them to pick up on the
stolen, uninsured and the like.
