Some good news in the free paper: there will be no new GATSOS in
    Northampton.

The guidelines say that the cameras can only be erected where there have
been 4 or more speed related accidents in three years.

On the downside, we already have 34, with 9 already passed which will be
    put up.

Well, it's a small bit og good news, I suppose.

which is all a classic piece of news management. They've got all the
gatsos they ever intended to put up so the authorities are happy.
They'll just increase all the other ways of nicking people for speeding
    - mobile vans, "temporary" cameras, more police checks, more unmarked
    cars etc etc.

Why bother? Northampton isn't exactly the largest of villages and they
will have 40 odd of the things plus options on more if they want it when
they are finished. About one for every horseless carriage I reckon.

    Alternative cynical view:

People are getting smart to the Gatso locations and slow down for them
so they aren't generating the planned revenues. Additionally the locals
are torching them on a regular basis and sticking things over the
lenses; it's a full time job keeping them operational.

The mobile vans are much more effective and actually catch people
    unawares.

I wish there were more gatso cameras and less vans.

But the vans look to the front of vehicles?

They do? I don't think the ones I've seen do. And anyhow, I drive a car
    occasionally.

You drive towards the video camera here at least. I like SPECS from this
perspective too. I drive as well as ride but in the cage I just glide along
(excepting m-ways) so it doesn't worry me the same way. 3 points/£60 I can
cope with. 12 Months/£1000 verges on the tedious.

Do you (or anyone else) know anyone that's been caught by SPECS? If so,
what kind of speeds are we talking about? I slow down to the temporary
limits, and have seen other drivers fair fly through a SPECS zone at
perhaps 20mph over the posted limit.

Agreed. Very few, new, static cameras are being erected in S Wales.
    Not exclusively.

We have "road safety vans" all over S.Wales. When they are on a dual
carriageway, parked in a layby, such as the one on the southbound A449
just past Wentwood Services, they are targetting oncoming traffic as the
approaching traffic cannot see them due to a dip in the road. Northbound
traffic can see the van for about a mile.

However, on the same road, between Usk & Raglan there is a bridge over
the road that allows them to target traffic in either direction as a
hedge obscures them from traffic approaching from the rear.

Doesn't matter, the operator has the powers to write down the
registration mark of the offending vehicle when it goes past. He/she
simply turns round and takes the number from the back of the vehicle.

I'd like to see anyone fight them on this, cos the bastards have every
base covered and you'll never win.

Not round here they don't, pass a van parked in a layby, on the verge
etc facing towards you and there could be a camera pointing out the
back of it. if its facing away from you the trap will be on a tripod
just in front of the bumper. The bastards use more than one colour of
    van as well.

You are probably right, but I 'm still glad to know no more are going
up. I think I know where all the current ones are.

As for whether we get more vans, we'll just have to wait and see.

That's so true. We've been wrapped up with the expansion and the big pallet
of dusty stuff is still on the racking.

Note to self: Sort it on Monday.
