So probably 85 ish real speed. As you were overtaking, it's quite conceivable that you accelerated from 50-85 to perform the overtake as swiftly (and hence safely) as possible, and then slowed back down to 50 afterwards. I doubt they'll have clocked the speed of the van in the photo. Seems like a reasonable enough excuse to escape a ban anyway.

FWIW I overtook a traffic car in a 60 limit once, the driver was doing (according to my speedo) spot on 60. I went past, when clear, slowly at about 65. Got in front the car and the lights came on. ****. Pulled over and the gist of the conversation was that if I was going to overtake I should have used much more power and got out of the 'danger zone' as quickly as possible. If this meant I had to break the speed limit well that would be ok. However the driver was a bike cop (it transpired) so I'm not sure if all would have this attitude.

I'm guilty of the "prolly", "ackshirly" and others purely because I've seen them here. In a way I think it detracts from the seriousness of a comment. For example, if you were replying to something that began with the word "ackshurly", it might sound like less of a chastisement or a way to hide a holier than thou stance about something than if it began "actually". Being the pedantic nature of a few here, you could prattle on all day and be on a never ending defence trip. That's just my view FWIW.
