NIP question

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Ben Blaney, Feb 20, 2004.

  1. When I got my NIP (104mph on the M25 variable speed section 5 years
ago), I rang them up and offered to TAKE a fixed penalty rather than
attend court; 3 points and a £40 fine.

    Always worth a try.

I'll try that. I've got to phone them up anyway - to find out the speed
and get them to send the photo.

    With a bit of luck it'll be a simple 3 pts, £60 and "you're a very bad
    and wicked person".

    Hopefully.

Youngster. In 1989 I was got my first job after uni aged 37. I earned
11K - about the same as before uni, but with amazing potential (as it
turned out). My mortgage was tiny. My kids were teenagers. We were a
two earner (or even earer) household with few commitments.
A good year for me, and I finished the degree I had started 3 years
    before. :)

It's because when we speak, we say 've, which sounds like 'of',
although it's short for 'have'. Plain iggerance. I think it's also
because usenet is essentially a spoken system, even though written
down (IYSWIM) and we tend to be informal, whereas if we wrote a
letter, say, we would take more care. Mind you, it annoys the hell out
    of me too.

My own pet hates are "arbitrator" and "burglarised". WTF not just say
    arbiter and burgled?

    My pet hates are
"sum-think" rather than "something" and particularly irritating is
"pacifickley" rather than "specifically". The other one which grates is "in
one foul swoop" which should be "in one fell swoop".

  17. "Fouls Swoop" can be correct.
When I were a lad I was strolling along the prom at Douglas with
my best girl by my side when a seagull swooped down and crapped
on the shoulder of my best suit.
    That was one foul swoop!

This seems to be the way of things. Last week I got a threatening
letter from the Electric board. Apparently I am not using enough
electricity so they are going to send the boys round, break into my
house and do something about it.

1989, the year of my 21st birthday. I was at polytechnic in 1989, also part
time (day release and evenings), no kids (still not got any), no mortgage,
just renting a room in a shared house, work were paying my college fees, and
I was earning £11,500pa plus whatever overtime I could screw out of them
(which wasn't much), so I suppose I wasn't doing too badly really, though I
certainly wasn't rolling in it. Makes me boggle these days when I hear about
graduate jobs paying £12 - 14,000pa, I mean FFS I was earning nearly that in
1989 as an undergraduate and I didn't feel particularly well off on it even
    then!
