    Hi,

I recently bought a starter on ebay for my 1986 Nighthawk CB700SC. The ad
said the starter was for the 650 or the 700 models. But the bolt holes don't
go the same direction. The seller says I can just take off the cap from my
starter and put it on the one I biught from him. Is this a good idea? Will
this work? Or will all the guts inside come poring out or something? I'm
comfortable changing the starter, but I've never had to take one apart
    before.

Thanks for any help you can offer!

Go to www.partsfish.com and look up both bikes' exploded drawings.
Compare both assemblies and see if the common parts share the same part
numbers. If they do you're in luck.

Exploded drawings are also nice for those times where the guts come
pouring out as you've stated and for when you end up with an "extra
    part" or two...

Sometimes the simple exploded drawings work better than the factory
    service manuals.

take the broken one apart first to see if "guts come pouring out" ... no
    harm no foul
