I had to click this to see, and it really is as simple as it seems -
now someone tell me please, what the **** is it for? Or should I say
who? I mean, surely everyone can work it out in their head whenever
    they fill up, can't they?

And even if you can't, would you really make a note of the figures,
then go home and look up an internet site instead of just tapping it
into a calculator, which would take, oooh, about fifteen seconds, I
    reckon.

Some people don't know how much a gallon is. Now I do and I know I'm a poof,
    averaging 38 mpg

But why would they want to measure their fuel consumption in MPG?

It's 8 pints, sure, but I'd have to think about it in litres. Not
exactly a handy conversion ratio, is it?

    4.54

Can't you do long division in your head then?

exactly, and if he finds that "two hard" then 4.5 is close enough for
    jazz.

And even a total mong can take the number of litres you've bunged in
the tank, double it, and divide by 9. Surely.

It's easier (& more accurate) to double the number of litres, add 10%
    then divide by 10.

It's easier to just pay whatever it costs to do the miles I want to do
in the vehicle of my choosing. Life's too short and fuel's too cheap to
    care.

    Why would you?
I was in the first year of O-Level arithmetic to permit calculators. They
were pricey little things then mind. I had a damn impressive piece of
Commodore equipment. Must have been an SR 4xxx model. The only people left
in the room after 3/4 of the allotted time were the pikeys.
