From a personal point of view I intensely dislike all forms of
moderation and I wish it were unnecessary. If people could be relied
upon to act like adults there would not be a problem, but a few do
    not.
I simply want to be able to involve myself in a sensible discussion
and the exchange of information that newsgroups make possible, without
interference. My own attitude is one of never saying anything to
anyone via usenet, that I would not say to them face to face. I don't
hide, I do not need to. I run several Yahoo groups for a variety of
purposes (similar to this one), but they are far from ideal.

So basically what I am saying is I do reluctantly back the idea of
moderated newsgroups, subject to knowing a little bit more about how
difficult they are to convert and knowing how they are operated...

    1. Can an existing ng be converted to a moderated one?

    2. Would a moderated ng still allow non-members to read the postings?

    3. What sort of process is involved in setting one up or converting an
    existing one?

Assuming 1 and 2 were true, I cannot see much of a problem in that
anyone would be able to read the group and join it if they wished.

    (Peter Parsnip) verbally sodomised in
Yes, as demonstrated by his emailing people in reply to usenet posts.
