Next time you HOG riders think you want to "show boat"...

After touring through Milwaukee and about, I found some interesting
stuff about the Harley Davidson line of motorcycles.

I was talking to some of the guys up there and they asked me what I
wanted to do. I replied "I want to see some new Harley Davidsons being
built". To my surprise, they took me there....to the Mercury plant to
show me the Harley Davidson motors being built.

    WHOA!

    Mercury? Like the car?

Nope, not exactly. Not even close.

Mercury as in Mercury Marine....as in the outboard power motors for
boats. It turns out Mercury Marine is also Brunswick (back to the
bowling balls...not the same as AMF though) and Mercury Marine has
been building the motors for Harley Davidson since the mid 90s. This
was something I had to see to believe.

Sure enough, the guys took me through the plant and showed me the
moldings, the castings, and yes...the engines they build for Harley
    Davidson in Milwaukee.

Next time you Harley riders what to think you riding a "show boat"
motorcycle....you might not be far off from the truth.

I *did* learn quite a bit on this recent trip and it was sure worth
    it.

As an added, the weather sucked and I almost got stranded. The
airplane took off on a closed airport, which closed due to the weather
    conditions.

I'll be completely honest and candid, if you get a chance to get up to
their plant (Mercury Marine) and get someone talked into taking you on
    a tour...TAKE IT!

I never really gave quite a bit of what I learned up there a second
thought. The way they cast and build engines, props and gears is quite
informative. The companies they build engines for is amazing. When I
first heard about them up there, I was under the impression they'd be
a factory just building/outfitting outboard motors. It was really
cool. They build from raw metal and mold from the liquid...a few hours
later they have a complete motor sitting on the floor.

The part of the Harley Davidson motor was REALLY cool. To see one
going from liquid metal into a mold and then on the other side of the
plant being a full motor was worth it!
