Any recommendations for Windows newsreaders that can be run standalone
    off a USB Memory stick?

I think you can run Agent from one.

you definitely can - Agent (at least up to v2.0) runs as a simple
executable with local data files, rather than as an installed
    application.

This was on the USB key that the Greater Paris region gave to all teachers
    and pupils this year ..

I _believe_ that there's a version of Thunderbird somewhere in that lot..

I've been using PA for many months and have never read it like that.

    I had a look at:

    Thunderbird - didn't like the threading/UI for newsgroups. I couldn't
get it set up like I have Xana set up.

XNews - got it working, seemed very old-school and not too bad but it
seemed to want to do "online" reading all the time. It didn't seem the
friendliest thing to set up, which for non-work related stuff means I
    pretty much don't bother.

That's how I'm using Agent right now, as I'm not at home. Works fine.

No I'm using Gravity, on a home pc.. I need something I can plug into
any random computer and take my newsgroup stuff with me.. portableapps
seems the best option at present.
