News servers

  1. I've just move out of home and while my bigpond news feed was
intermittent at my old place, I am now staying with thee lovely Jules
[1] for a short while and it just won't work. I think it may possibly
be a latency thing with my USB modem because back in my old place, if
I switched over to my flatmates ADSL wireless feeed, Bigpond would
come through fine every time. I'm sort of clutching at straws here as
everything else works fine on this USB key, speed seems fine. I can't
find a setting in Agent to change how long it waits to connect to the
    server.

    Any thoughts foks?

Anyway, I found a free server called news.nucleus.com that loads
pretty quick and seem to consistently connect. No passwords or
registration needed, although how long that will last I dunno.

So for the moment if anayone is looking for a good free one this seems
    good for now.

And I don't want to read from Google groups and don't want to change
    away from Forte Agent.

[1] Big big thanks to Jules. Mind you, hearing the Speed Triple rumble
in and out of the garage just adds to my non0bike frustration . . .

news.eternal-september.org is my newsgroup of choice
Excellent feeds and great retention rates and FREE. No binaries though.

After experience lack of bigpond news server access on a bigpond/telstra
next G USB modem I range support.

After an extended period of time I was informed it was not accessible
    from the USB 3G modems.

When I pointed out that it used to be I got 'blankness' basically...

  6. news.individual.de 10 euros a year but well worth it. They were free for
years and for the amount of time I've spent on their server they have certainly
earned a few beers a year.

You can use the Telstra's un-publicised news server reader.news.telstra.net
, you don't need any passwords or anything , it's free and it can be used by
    anybody.

I am with iiNet and I have been using Telstra's news server for at least 5
years , it contains a full list of Ngs , including binaries and has a fairly
    good updating and retention rate.
I have only see it go belly up a few times in the last 5 years , so it is a
whole lot more reliable than Pigpond's news-server.bigpond.net.au

reader.news.telstra.net uses the same standard news server port and all you
need to do is create a new news account with your news sig , email address
and just plug in reader.news.telstra.net for the server name .

  9. Cool, thanks for that.

I seem to be going fine on nucleus but if anything falls over, I'll
    give that a go.

    Cheers

I'm posting via <http://news.datemas.de/> who offer text only access.

On their web page they say:

"Registration includes posting access and costs 5.00 EUR per year.
Payable through Paypal.com or Moneybookers.com, conversion from common
    currencies is possible.
Order your access login at Order news server access
30 days try-out for free is possible."

I also have a block account with Astraweb who allow me to download
    binaries. <http://www.news.astraweb.com/specials/kleverig-11.html>
They offer a block account which doesn't expire, 25GB for $US10.00.

If news.nucleus.com starts playing up, both the above provide excellent
newsgroup access. Datemas text only, Astraweb text and binaries.
