I treat my accelerator like a button and I get 250km out of a 12-13 litre
fill. (I always fill up at 250km because I once tried to test the range and
ended up running out of fuel mid corner. Ouch.)
I spend about $6/week on fuel compared with $30 I used to put in the car.
(for getting to and from work)

Thankyou to everyone for their input.
I'll be checking out mad bikers website and looking into all the models
    mentioned.

    So it was a
    Kawasaki GPX
Honda VTR or Spada or CB

If they're all capable of accelerating my fat arse to 120kph, are there any
    clear winners on reliability?

    thanks agian.

    Spada vtr250
bulletproof and capable of accelerating your arse to 120 kmh.
(What about the rest of you though?)

  10. IMHO, the GPX is the only one you have listed there that will _comfortably_
accelerate your fat arse to 120kph.

When I was GPX mounted, I used to go riding a lot with a guy who had a
VTR250. On the freeway, I would be doing 110-120, and would always have to
slow down to let him catch up.

I find it hard to believe that the vtr is slower than a spada.

I'm not light, I've had Big's spada going harder than most GPXs.

    You'll be sorry!

(Especially if the time come where you're required to choose between
the girlfriend or the motorcycle, and you go with the girlfriend.)

Anyhoo, here's what one can do with a GPX250:

  13. Yeah, the Spada was still going great after 6,500km in 7 days - it
wasn't all highway riding though, there was that stretch of dirt road
north of Lyndhurst (which actually _was_ a "highway" according to the
map I think), there was the 4wd trail through the Flinders Ranges
complete with 100m long 3 foot deep water crossing (the Bracina Gorge
Geological Trail from memory), that trip also included the Great Ocean
Rd, the roads through The Grampians, a dirt track up to the base of Mt
Napier, the Snowy Mountains, Brown Mountain, Kings Highway...

No, 3hr of highway is _not_ a problem for a Spada. I doubt its actually
a problem for _any_ 250cc road bike.

  14. I'm a shave under 100kg and I got up to 130km/h once on my GPX250.
120 is about as far is it likes to go without complaining.[/QUOTE]

My gps reported a top speed of 171kmh for my Spada somewhere between
Thredbo and Canberra a while back (on a closed privately ownd circuit,
_honest!_). 100kg is lighter than I've been for a _long_ time...

But there was always something special about Big's spada.. I mean, it
    beat my R6 once!

the infamous MZ managed all over eastern Australia, and even managed the
    speedlimit on the flat!

Clare used to take hers the 2-3hours to Hines Hill, although as it got
older it preferred to sit on 90 and slipstream trucks.

If an incredibly primitive East German pistonport 2 stroke with 12
pound drainpipes for exhausts - even though Walter Kaaden did invent the
expansion chamber it never made it to the road bikes - can handle full
day runs at redline, 40 years younger design 4 strokes with non-Soviet
metallurgy should be able to manage a couple of hours.

  17. I've got my Spada up to 110kph, with me on it (100kg), my gf (50kg), a
tank bag (prob about 10kg) and a backpack (another 5kg), all up approx
165kg. It took a while to wind up to that speed though.

Spent a couple of months cruising around with just me on it, with a
tank bag & saddlebags and she easily got up to 120kph.

Spada's a good bike, and takes the obligatory learner drop well.
Doesn't take/cost much in maintenance either. Also plenty of spares
from the other 250 VTR bikes.

  18. Musta been stuck in - errrmmm - 4th...

    ;-)

According to the gear ratios, redline in top is 184kmh.

They don't _quite_ get there - the straight at Eastern Creek usually saw
me hit (gps measured) 160kmh (gps measured - 170-175 on the speedo) if I
got out of turn 12 properly. On a longer straight stretch (quite
possibly down hill in a tail wind) the gps said mine hit 171kmh.

I'll see what I can get in my price range. GPX is sounding good with the
    larger tank.

I do the riding test tomorrow night. I hope to get something within the next
    couple of weeks.

    thanks all.

  20. That I deny, I have only once even felt slipstream from a truck.
And I once did seize up the engine doing 120 downhill, but it recovered
    when it cooled...
