I did email you about this because I preferred not to discuss it on the
    group.

Sorry, I'll stop now and let Loz take his JCB back.

I don't think I got that email - I seem to have been losing a lot of email
    recently.

How much can you learn in a couple of days? Not a fucking lot.

I have to disagree with Bear on this one. I did a full time five day
course before I got my restricted licence, and a full day course just
before I did my unrestricted licence. Perhaps it was because I had
been on a 500cc bike for six months, but I got very little out of the
full day course before my Cat-A test.

The only things that weren't really covered on the restricted course
was pushing the bar when giving it beans from stationary and a brief
explanation of counter steering. I knew about both from speaking with
UKRM peeps and have a working understanding of them.

Gyroscopic Precession. Gyroscopes trying to stand upright, two of
them with tyres on the outside.

If you lean over too far you will fall over.

    Biz says...
I dunno. I just ride the thing and subconciously do what's needed to
make it do what I want it to. I haven't ever tried to fathom out in
depth what exactly I do to acheive the desired result.
Helps if there's someone on board at the time.

    I haven't lost my mind, it's
backed up to a floppy disc
    that's around here somewhere.

Auvache sponsored my light bulb moment. I then went out on a bit of
straight road and pushed the left handlebar with my hand and the bike
moved left. If I pushed the handlebar with my left hand then the bars
are now facing ever so slightly to the right. As the tyres are curved
if I push it left then the bike is going to fall to the left on the
curve of the tyre. It's to do with the angle of the forks and other
    sourcery.
One really can't change the laws of physics. Next time you have a bit
of straight road get up to about 40mph and then lean off your bike.
Make sure you keep the bars straight (forward) and you'll notice that
the bike leans quite happily and goes straight forward.
It'll go in a straight line until it meets a wall or until it goes
slow enough for gyroscopic precession to stop happening and then fall
    over.

Next time you have a push bike wheel off, hold it at an angle and then
spin it - gyroscopic forces will make it stand upright.

Or, find someone with a gyroscope and spin it. It'll force itself
    upright.

I've been thinking about this recently and if I try to pay attention to
what I'm doing I can feel my leg pressing against the tank and myself
shifting weight around at the same time as I countersteer.

But normally I don't have a fucking clue how the bike does what it does.

Each to his own I suppose. I just hang on for grim death and hope it is
    going to be relatively painless.
I have found that the level of *my* proactivety when cornering is
inversely proportional to the actual length of my Thousand Yard Stare.
I suspect this is part of the proof of The Law of Target Focus.
