newbie question on v-twins

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by ians brother greg, Jul 12, 2006.

  1. hey all,

i am soon to get my unrestricted license and i want to upgrade to a bike
    with a v-twin. currently im on a honda vt250.
however the only ones i know are the honda vtr1000 and they start at about
    7grand.
does anyone know of any v-twin bikes, between 600 and 1200cc, from the early
nineties? preferably in the naked/sports tourer style
    cheers
    g.

    Try these:

    Suzuki SV650/SV650S
    Yamaha TRX850
    Ducati Monster 600

  3. The one I'd recommend would be a Yamaha Virago. They come in assorted
sizes, all good. I'd go for an 1100.

the TRX is an inline twin, but worthy of consideration... they sound
better than a lot of V-twins

virago's are a bit sporty, harleys are slower and easier to ride

270 degree crank gives it the same firing pattern as a v twin, so it
sounds the same - triumph did the same with the bonneville america (I
think the thruxton and co are still 180 degree parallels ?)

Others to consider in addition to the above:
    Suzuki TL1000
the rest of the ducati family aside from the monster 600 (ie SS and
    monster750, 900 etc by the parameters I don't think you'll be stretching
    to a 996 et al)
Cagiva Raptor and SV1000 are a bit newer and possibly out of price range
Aprilia Tuouno (maybe too new - forget when they started making it) or
    the Aprilia Falco
    Yamaha TDM
BMW R series (ask the experts, dunno what was what but something like
    R1100 I think for early 90's)

    Harley Davidson
    Ducati [God]
    Aprilia

All the jappers are just clones of each others [change the colour and
decals and the mothers could not tell them apart...]

While you're in a helpful mood, why don't you list all of the models
from the above manufacturers that the OP might be able to afford, given
that his budget doesn't seem to stretch as far as $7K.

Trying to come up with something that is not already mentioned and is
    from the early nineties:

Honda NTV 650 (not very sporty, though)
Honda Transalp (probably not what you're after either)

    Monster late 600 & 750 early 1000
HD Sportster 1200 [or late 883]
    Early Falco S1

    Cheers

  12. Bearing in mind that BMW's R series have boxer engines, not V-twins.

If you happen to be in the NSW bit of Oz, look out for Hyosung Comet, 650.

They are actually learner legal (LAMS) but very little effort is
required to fix that, when done, they become a very sweet wee motorcycle.

They also look more like a Ducati 999 than something four times the
    price! :)

VX800 Suzook or NTV/Revere 650 Honda are mid-sized and cheapish.
    Plus there's a hundred cruisers.

You are indeed correct, but I included two parallel twins with 270 deg
cranks, so I was taking a loose "twins" definition rather than a
specific V twins. The riding characteristics of parallel 180, 270 and
360 twins and v twins are quite similar, laying out the parallel
cylinders in a flat format doesn't change things all that much (keeping
the COG low is however a positive for the handling)

Good one Cam, the g/f and I parked next to one of the new models the
other day and we were doing the "I can't believe that's a Hyosung" thing.

Looks damn fine aesthetically and the quality of finish seemed
reasonable - it'd be up the top of my list of cheap commuter bikes.
