Along the same lines is the XT660 X. Basically the same bike as 660 R but
    more supermoto styled.
Different wheels, bigger front disc and a few other minor differences.

Had one out for a test ride the other day and it was a hoot.

A bit pricey mind at 5k + but insurance is low and shouldn't feel too
    threatening for your first bike.

Fazer is another good option as is the hornet but both are 4 groups higher
    than the 660R/X i think.

Mine was red, only thing i've ever been able to wheelie.
Mind you I was only about 7 stone in those days.
that little thing took me everywhere, even on a camping trip in snowdon,
    fully laden.
it eventually died due to me never putting 2 stroke oil in it.

Yes, until you realise that there are 1000cc + bikes that make less power
    than 600cc ones.

So, in theory, riding a cruiser for a few years should perfectly prepare you
for getting on a GSX-R1000 - at least in the eyes of the insurers.

Now, Dan. This bike is big because it is very close - those bikes are
    far away ...

It's better than no attempt to value riding history in the equation at all.
And I don't actually know whether it's just cubic capacity that is factored
    in - do you?

"Experience riding a motorcycle of similar performance" is a phrase
that springs to mind, as used by a Carole Nash Phonedroid when I
    enquired about insuring a ZX-9R(1). Bit a Catch-22 predicament,
perhaps. Apparently they would accept a year on a Bandit12 and 3
    years NCB in total.

Another back door would be to go for an older big, fast bike like a
    ZZR-1100, or <cough> an RF900 or similar.

So yes, there are other considerations apart from engine size -
performance, postcode and rider (insurance) history at least.

    1. At the time there were a number of bikes that came into the
"difficult to get insurance cover for" category, due to their record
of lobbing riders about, or being very nickable and dickable.
The 9R, R1, Blackbird and Hyabusa were in this category which no doubt
also covers the ZZR-12, ZX-10 and others now.

I had a Gilera Runner 125VX, which was pretty nippy for a scoot, but it had
a weird carburation problem that the dealer couldn't get to the bottom of.
And then the electrics started playing up. I dropped it off today and got
almost a full refund (200 squid less than I paid for it -- I'd done about
    2,500km on it).
If it hadn't had the carburation & electrics problems, I would've definitely
kept it. It was relatively quick, a good commuter, cheap to run and insure
    and it looked good too.
Ideally I'd like a scooter, bike AND car (since they all serve different
purposes), but that's just being greedy!
    Regards
    Nick
