I'm a newbie to motorbikes. Up til now I've had scooters, but have decided
recently I want to get a motorbike.
I'm thinking about either the Yamaha FZ6 Fazer or Honda CB600 Hornet. (I
like the look of the Yamaha BT1100 Bulldog, but I reckon that's too much of
a jump up from a 125cc scoot). Either those 2 or an off-road bike like the
    XT 660 R.
All I'd like to know is whether anyone here has any of those bikes and how
    they rate them.
I'm looking for something reliable in all weathers and the coldest English
    winter.
If anyone can suggest any other similar 600cc bikes then I'll look into
    those too.
    Thanks
    Nick

BT1100 is no faster than a 125 scooter......

    SteveH says...
The Bulldog is rated as having 64bhp and a top speed of approx 120mph.
I've never seen a 125 scooter with that much power and 120mph
    capability.

www.ukrm.net/faq before you do anything else :) (and I mean that, the
    natives are feisty ATM)

I'm sure several people will be along to recommend SV650s, Fazers and
    Bandits.

You have had some insurance quotes, haven't you? You might find that they
limit your choice more than anything else.

Depends how long he's been on scoots - he could have had a full licence for
3 or 4 years, and 5 years no claims.

Have a look at a Suzuki SV650 - easy to ride, but enough go and
    handling for great fun.

Nick Worley emerged from their own little world to say
I quite like the Hornet. Rev the tits off it and it is great fun.

Fazer should be similar but I've never ridden one.

Suzuki SV650 is liked by many on here

Various 650 singles: used only, Honda Dominator; new/used BMW in various
formats (650CS has belt drive which is less hassle than chain drive); new
for 2005 Honda super-moto; Aprilia Pegaso

It has to be a Bandit 600. Cheap to buy, run, insure, repair, etc. Easy to
ride, plenty quick enough, handle well, etc. You can't go wrong. Borrow one
    and have a play.

Several? I would recommend only one, and it's in my sig. Still haven't
decided how much I want for it though, or whether I _really_ want to
    sell it at all.

platypus secured a place in history by writing:
More than one insurer this year asked what I had previously been riding.
It seems to now be a factor in the ultimate quote. Quite right too.

Any 600 after a scoot will be a blast. Stop bothering yourself, buy the
first bike that seems sensibly priced and swap it after a year when you
have a new, refined approach to caring about which model exactly you should
    buy. Really.
