Just because two bikes are in the same, class, doesn't mean that one
is an evolution of the other.

The Zephyr 1100 was the last hurrah of the air-cooled, 8 valve big
Kawasaki fours that started with the Z900 in 1973 and (almost) ended
    with the GPz1100 [1].

The ZRX, while maintaining the naked 80s muscle-bike look, uses the 16
valve water cooled motor that first appeared as the GPz900R in 1984
and went on to power the ZZR1100 amongst others.

[1] the air-cooled one in the 80s, not the water-cooled one in the
    90s[2]
[2] I *really* wish Kawasaki woudln't re-use their model names

  2. Good explanation, cheers for that.

Just one point though, had Kawasaki decided to develop the Zephyr, rather
than discontinue it, I would guess that they would have kept the same basic
naked / retro style, used a more modern engine, better brakes and suspension
and ended up with something not dissimialr to the ZRX, hence my
misconception that the ZRX is a development of the Zephyr / ZR (albeit
    without the smaller engined models).

Well, once you change the engine, brakes, wheels and suspension, not
much is left on a bike, you know. You could argue that this is what
they did - in fact, they probably started with a blank piece of paper,
with a brief to replicate the Eddie Lawson replica look of the 80s,
and use what they had in the parts bin - which meant a water-cooled
16v motor, and the standard issue brakes and wheels.

    Decent gear is a must.

It need not be too expensive; army surplus for thermals, scarves, glove
liners etc. and a good jacket.

    I'd recommend the Bering textile jacket (and their gloves) I've got;
simply because I'm so impressed with it. Warm and waterproof - in some
truly atrocious conditions - and it's still in good nick after 5 years.

Both my recent offs would have been avoided had I been riding something
with decent brakes and not an East German machine doing fair impression
of a supertanker on a bakelite sea.

    Heh, when I was a lad I yearned for a KH250.

If I want another SOB I'll have to build another shed first.

well, exactly. Which is why I don't understand the whole "you'll learn
a lot more if you stick to riding a 125 after passing your test"
    mantra.
