I can think of 2 UKRMers who did marathon rides without such a promise. One
was my ride from just north of Annecy to Herefordshire. I don't think the
other is too hard to guess.

BTW, does porl have a bot ego-surfing or does he diligently read all of
UKRM? My Aus$ is on vanity.

Well quite. Not all of my epic rides have either. Not all.
It's the only explanation that makes sense.

I did Andorra - Swindon on the Tiger & Geneva - Swindon on the MV in a
day[1], neither of which were for a shag.

    [1] Different days, obviously.

    No shit.

Well he probably did, in a field in Piedmont on the way through. And Savoy.
    And Champagne-Ardennes. And Picardy.

Shirley most older riders will have done something like that at some stage,
Cape Town to Pretoria then onward to Salisbury the next day was my claim
    to biking foolishness. Onna Tiger.

A 1000 miles in a day? I like to think it's a pretty select group.
But I've bragged about it enough times on here before.
    How far is that then?

I can't claim better than 600 or so (Scourie Sutherland to Birmingham).
But that was two up, with camping gear, in the days when an R90/6 was
state of the art for a long distance tourer and there wasn't so much
motorway as today. Out trumped by a TOG exploit on something tiny IIRC.

    Cape Town - Pretoria 1468km
Pretoria - Harare (Salisbury) 923 km

So not quite 1000 miles/day, but a bloody long way on 1960s Triumph even
    in the 1970s.

Close enough for me to do it in a day in a Toyota pick up on numerous
occasions. I can't remember how far it was but it was a fair old
distance and I used to get pissed off when I was sent to Cape Town.

  13. Redhill-Bol d'Or, non-stop (well, except for ferry), on a 12bhp Honda
    NSR125 in 1989 or 1990.

Took me 16 hours from Calais. Right through the night, from 10pm to 2pm
    the next day.

I'm not a member of the 1000 miles club, unfortunately. My personal
    one-day best is 908 (on a Kawasaki 650 Tengai).
