That shows what you know about literature, pal. It's nowhere near as
good as "Go to the park".

    Read it.
The Lost Continent was the only one to make me laugh out loud, but the
next two were funny. The rest went downhill, as he entered the land
    of self-parody.

  8. Books I've gone through recently, and recommend, are:

Thomas Pynchon - The Crying of Lot 49
    William Golding - Freefall
Fyodor Dostoevsky (sp?) - The Idiot

Currently reading Toni's Morrison's The Bluest Eye which is, in short,
    fucking incredible.

    I think I did, but I'll check.

I went to the Steinbeck Museum in Salinas, CA [0], with my Dad in
October. Excellent museum; really well presented. Dad *really*
enjoyed it, partly because his favourite film is East of Eden [1].

I felt "Go to the park," lacked the depth of betrayal and undercurrents of
conspiracy provided by "New Shoes," but I bow to your superior knowledge.

I hadn't thought of it like that. I shall re-read the works, with
this alternative perspective in mind. Thanks for the pointer.

I'd also recommend Wheen's effort and also Hegemony or Survival by Noel
Edmonds or Noam Chomsky I forget which.. For laughs I'd go for (since Bryson
isn't funny anymore) anything by Carl Hiaasen (sp) or Stephen Fry,
    especially The Hippopotamus.

I do indeed and that is a valid point but I largely didn't notice them
    too much.
Now all his books amuse me but yes I can see that one is funny and
perhaps a little too truthful :)

Currently reading The Murder of Mr. Grebbell. OK, it's local history
for me, but is a nice history book to boot.
