Do you do detectives? If so, any of the "Rebus" novels by Ian Rankin.
Except "Resurrection Men", which wasn't one of the best.

A Star Called Henry - Roddy Doyle
Round The Bend - Nevil Shute

I've got "The Number One Ladies' Detective Agency" by Alexander McCall
Smith on the "to read" pile ATM. It comes highly recommended.

    Non-fiction:

    Enigma - Hugh Sebag-Montefiore
    Longitude - Dava Sobel
    Backroom Boys - Francis Spufford
The Fever Trail - Mark Honigsbaum

Not as good as "Biggles In Australia", which I came across in a
second-hand bookshop a while back, and couldn't resist buying.

By Christ, but those books were *astonishingly* racist.

  4. Oddly I'm having a bit of a cleansing of old shite at the moment and
found about 30 Biggles books in a box in the garage.

I started to read a couple, but got a bit fed up. In Biggles in Africa
he beat up a 'native' for being cheeky to him... Those were the days...

True. He was always better when downing the beastly Hun. I always liked
the bit where he set his teeth and growled "I'm going to get you, you
    filthy swine!".

Might not be instantly addictive for some, but from personal experience
I can tell you the second time I tried it nasally, I didn't get anything
like the effect I got the first time.

I can see how many people are always chasing the first hit - that way
    lies the road to addiction.

I've not bothered my arse with it since. Even speed palled after a
while; generally feeling shite is enough to put you off. Fortunately, I
seem to have a built-in aversion therapy for these things, given that I
feel shite for days afterwards and the memory of that is greater than
the euphoria of the actual drug.

Read a couple of Howard Jacobson books recently. Rather literate, and
might be up your street. "Coming from Behind" was his first novel,
and I quite enjoyed it, but "Who's Sorry Now" is his most recent in
paperback, and a fair bit more involved.

I also read "The Wasp Factory" recently (having read most of Banks
other non-M work, I thought I'd better read the first one). I was
amused that some of the reviews included in the opening pages were
very negative. Anyway - kolly good, and if it wasn't actually
disturbing, it was certainly somewhat disquieting.
