I was thinking something very similar, but for a slightly different
reason. I like the look of the Mac thing that Simon posted the link to,
    mind.

of course, when you say "magic", you mean "it scans the barcode and
looks up the ISBN details in exactly the same way as the PC software
does, only using pattern recognition rather than laser scanning".

And it's not as if an iSight is actually much cheaper than a barcode
    scanner.

    alright then, "indistinguishable from magic"
This is true. They are, however, rather cool - and you can't make your own
    porn with a barcode reader.

it's pretty insidious evil, when you get down to it. Is he still with

  12. Ah well, it was about £58 here so when I got it for $65 in Seattle I
    figured I scored a bargain.
The first time I read The Code Breakers it was an early ~ 1967 edition
and Enigma didn't have such a high coverage as the later editions.
IIRC an ex bletchly bod wrote his life story in the '70s and after
    that the secret was out.

Indeed she did and it was terrible, an absolute travesty of a superb

I get the impression that one is either highly addicted to nicotine
(as I was and most regular smokers are) or barely addicted, if at all
(like you). I'm convinced that one is pretty much born into one camp
or the other, except that an occasional smoker might eventually end up
addicted whereas I'm sure there's absolutely no way an addict could
ever become just an occasional smoker.

I think addiction is one of those things where having experienced it
yourself makes it much easier to comprehend its effect on others. For
example, I consider myself lucky that I was one of those smokers who
could sleep through the night without waking up needing a cigarette -
    plenty can't.

  17. I never smoke until I have my first drink - normally about 2pm. People
say "If you can go that long without a smoke - why bother at all?". I
enjoy a smoke with a drink. I sometimes light a cigarette at home, and
then proceed to throw it away.

    Man, am I odd.

Yeah, we're using him for the odd thing on our side, but he's mainly working
