New Section on Website

Discussion in 'Texas Bikers' started by Road Glidin' Don, Mar 14, 2009.

  1. I've added a "Bonus" section to my website that gives the latitude to
    do a few more things.

    1. It lets users contribute pictures of themselves and their bikes and
    view others' contributions.
    2. It releases (to a restricted audience) some of the more
    controversial aspects of some stories.

On that latter point, I'm re-writing the highway motorcycle-pedestrian
incident that's been discussed here before, to improve the prose and
    include some pictures.

There's already an article in the new section covering an Alberta bike
rally in 2004. This is made interesting by a wet t-shirt contest
(streaming video included) and the presence of a CBC documentary.

It'a all free. It's just that, when it comes to uploading and stuff,
you'll need to click "Register" on the site to gain permission. Once
you get that, a "Bonus" entry appears on the menu (if you log on).
I've covered it in more detail in today's blog entry as well.

    The website is at: http://www.xidos.ca

The blog describing the feature is at: http://www.xidos.ca/Blog/tabid/128/BlogID/1/Default.aspx

    Cheers.

  2. <snip>

Dog gone. 5 minutes after I posted that, I discovered the computer
that serves the most frequently accessed pictures and videos has
crashed. The basic functionality (including registration), text
portions and lesser-viewed pictures are still available, however.

I'm in the process of flipping the links to a different server right
now, but it will take a little time... I'll indicate when that's
    done.

  5. I'm using the "Repository" module, Jerry. You've used DNN yourself
    before?

It let's me set things up so that, when a file gets uploaded, it
notifies me and, until I give it approval, it doesn't appear for
    others to see.

Having a major headache right now, with the high-speed server just
having gone down, but I've already got portions of the site working
proper again (including that new Bonus section).

I have used DNN for awhile. My old site is DNN, but I don't think I have
done anything with it for a year or so. I had and have great plans for it,
but my creativity and desire run in short cycles. I have an older photo
module that I used, but I will change it if I ever get back to it. I am
thinking about getting the gallery module from here to use when I update and
    redo my site.

  9. I'll have to check that gallery module out. Right now I just use HTML
    inside a Text/Html module.

As far as having time to update and maintain a site... well, you
should move up to Canada. With the long winters here, you'll have
lots of time on your hands, like me!

  13. That's a true statement that I'll bet many can identify with. It
often seems that the fewer 'To-Do' things I have on my plate, the less
energy I have. That's when make-work projects can be helpful.

  14. Uh oh. I wonder how long it's gonna take for them to knock on my door
for the Wet T-Shirt video on my site?

Of course, in Canada, we tend to be pretty liberal on that sort of
    thing.
Please use the pink, international money-orders when sending your
monthly donations. It's becoming a pain cashing in the States-only,
    green ones, K?
    Buy Bear-Stearns!

They make money the old-fashioned way. They earn it.

  15. Just so I'm not misunderstood, I fully empathize with your plight,
Pender. You and I are obviously kindred spirits (I never grew up
    either).

I mean it's getting so bad that, when I dismount my bike, I can't
finish a smoke before at a nubile, young lady is mounting me in a leg-
    wrap-style hug.

That's hard on the back for a man my age (even though I am a mountain
    of a man).

And then they get hung up on this special belt buckle I wear.

I really like that belt buckle. I'll be sad to see it go, but it's
    that or a lawsuit someday.

    Heh heh.
