New Router

Looks like I need a new router my current Netgear WGR614v9 doesn't like
the works VPN (I think it's Cisco). It also flatly refuses to upgrade
    its firmware.

So, I need a wireless cable router with firewall, port forwarding, dyndns
    and the like.

Of course with Virgin's upcoming 100Mb service I may not need one but
it's getting on my tits the VPN dropping out so I'll probably have to get
    one anyway.

    What's the router of choice?

One of the only ones that stays stable on my Virgin connection. Setup
    could be better, frankly.

Other than that, I had good experiences with Zyxel kit, but the cable
device seemed far less accomplished than the corresponding ADSL kit, and
    far less reliable.

We have a Netgear DG834Gv5 - works fine on SWMBO's cisco vpn. No idea
    about port forwarding, dyndns etc

That's a pity. Since upgrading the firmware on mine, I've had no troubles
since. I've gone from rebooting once or twice a day to not needing to in
    about 2 weeks and counting.

I'm sure you're happy to hear of my good fortune.

Is there a way of doing it? It says "Firmware upgrade failed. Check
    file".

    Any idea?

Mine said it was out of memory on the upload, so I rebooted it and tried
    again. Then it worked.

A bit of Googling latter and I discover as it has Virgin branded firmware
it can't be upgraded. So back to buying a replacement...

When I had cable I used a Linksys router. A housemate used to VPN into
the uni system using it. IIRC Linksys is the retail arm of Cisco.

The router still works and sits in a cupboard as a back-up for when my
lad kills the Belkin attached to his cable modem.

Of course, you could do a darsy and play the "I'm fucking off card" with
Virgin and get a "free" replacement. It will be another Netgear but
    might be a better version.

I have used Linksys kit for years now, and they have generally been

intermittently didn't allow communication between connected devices,
    only through the WAN port....

Odd. I've got a WRT160N here - and it plays that game just fine...

    (They take DD-WRT firmware, too)

Now, then. You're a youngster, in touch with the throbbing beat and
street speak - so just WTF does that phrase mean?

I *am* sorry, old bean. I should be interpreted as follows:

Out of the entire set of devices that I have used to route traffic on my
Virgin Media supplied internet connection, very few functioned
acceptably. The Airport Extreme device was one of those that functioned
    acceptably.

Had I realised that you were so advanced in senility, I should have paid
    more attention to my phrasing.

However, the need to balance time spent composing posts to this august
organ against doing other 'stuff' I find myself tending towards the
attitude of Life's Too Short To Proofread Usenet. Or indeed, sense check
it for the pedants amongst the putative audience.

In closing, may I take this opportunity to wish you and yours the finest
    of all possible days.

    I think there's 2 versions of the WRT160N, one takes the DD-WRT
firmware, one doesn't... No prizes for guessing which one I had.

One could re-write that post a lot more succinctly:

    "**** off, Pip!"

Please, don't put words into my mouth. If I'd *wanted* to say '**** off,
    Pip!', I would have done.

I'm saving it for later ;)

    Ah... <checks> There's three... v1(1.0 & 1.1) & v3 do, v2 is "can be, but
not currently - it's in the works"...

    Bait? Moi?

No, really - that's one of my pet hate phrases that is widely (mis)used
and doesn't really mean a damned thing. "One of the only" can be
generally assumed to mean "the only one" and as you point out, I'd
quite happily accept "one of the few" in this case. Bah!

Note the "SIR", mate. Senility In Retirement, that is. I'm closing on
    auvache in that respect.
Plenty of pedants round here. Boy.
I thank you, kind sir, and reciprocate. Blessed be.
