That sounds like lawyer talk for "not my area of expertise, but I don't
    want to sound ignorant."

A common expression used by my favourite lawyer is "I don't know, but I know
    how to find out."

Somehow that inspires confidence for me. I know she won't give me a guess.

The world would be a better place if more lawyers, mechanics and IT techs
could use that expression, instead of relying on bullshit to cover for the
fact that they don't really know everything.

The difference between a car salesman and a computer salesman: the car
salesman knows when he is telling lies.

But... here's the catch - if you on a bike over 250 ccs and not on the NSW
Wrong, you are only limited by the restrictioins on your license in the state it was issued.
so some poor schmuck from QLD (sorry TB, Clem) if they had their L's, and didnt do Qride,
would be limited to riding a 250 with either a full rider as pillion, or riding alongside.,

Thusly i had no trouble on my ACT P's license (C) when i first moved to NSW, i had the ACT
restrictions so i could drive as fast as the posted limit and not have a 90km/h limit enforced
    on me.

    Cheers,

You haven't seen 'em pile on the bullshit until you say "I'm just
checking how many watt-hours per day it uses, since I'll be using it
with a solar power system. What's the startup surge current on these
    then?" ;-)

How can you tell when a car salesman/computer
    salesman/politician/tradesman/lawyer/etc. is telling lies?

    His lips are moving.

So, if you here someone say, "Hi, I'm from the RTA. I'm here to help
you." you'd consider it to be along the same lines as "I promise that I
    won't come in your mouth...."

And that's pretty well the basis for adopting procedures like ISO
9001/2. Have a system in place that if you do not know the answer, you
know where to go to find it.

It accepts the fact that everyone doesn't know everything. So ISO 9001/2
sets down ways and means for company employees to find out the correct
    information.

Where I work, the email system is Lotus Notes. Piggybacked onto that is
a program called ISO Easy, which maintains all of our procedures and
technical instructions. A tad difficult to use at times (nicknamed "ISO
Not so Flamin' Easy) but it allows ISO 9001/2 compliant procedures to be
    set in place.

I only wish the government call centres would adopt and adhere to it.

Tell me about it. I'm picking a new car up this afternoon. The glibness
of them knows no bounds, especially when you ask them fairly straight
    technical answers.

For example, I'm test driving the car that I eventually bought. Where's
the traction control, I asked. The salesman pointed to the indicator on
the dash. Yeah, I can see that. Where's the on/off switch? The salesman,
who didn't know, rambled on about it being automatic or something.

Anyway, a minute later I found the switch. Hidden behind the steering
wheel on the right side of the dash....

    Burn-outs!

Every car I've driven with traction-control (from new minis to mid-range
BMW's) has been a pig to start from stationary on hills, and on damp roads.
Not much point being bogged-down in the middle of an intersection with
20-year-old Barinas and the like having to brake to avoid liberacing you.

Geez, Theo, you are getting old..... ;-)

Dunno about you, but I consider cars, motorcycles and such like as tools.

I want/expect/demand that they operate in a consistant manner.

I really don't want the tool trying to out think me.

Hmmm, maybe it's me getting too old for this hi-tech shit.
