Let's face it; he's _way_ beyond any help we could give him.

The Multipla is obviously better, being much roomier and more comfortable
within a smaller package, more reliable, economical etc. It's just a pity
they don't have an automatic version.

Had one of the last of the Montego estates as a company car[1] 2 litre
diesel was an excellent if very smoky engine rest of the car was
pretty dated for IIRC 1993 ish.

[1] Rumour was the production line which was being shipped to india
was restarted for our order, sounds a bit unlikely.

  4. Truly great small diesel. One of the best before mad chipping of the VWs
started in earnest. I recall hammering one down the Shap and seeing an
indicated 110mph in a Montego van, with the need for an extra gear.
China, afair, so possible - or they just picked some from the backlog on
the aerodromes, peeled the spider webs off and flogged them.

Not that far from the truth. The production line never went to India,
instead around 500 CKD kits were shipped out. By 93,, production had all
but stopped, apart from fleet orders, which were almost assembled by hand.

It was the Maestro went to China, where it apparently continues to thrive...

Bollocks I am. I've kept this Multipla for 8+ years, more than twice as
long as any other car I've owned. I'd like it to be newer, more powerful
and automatic, but aside from that it's an outstanding vehicle.

I'm not eccentric, just excessively rational.
    I like autos.

My ex Jane had one of those, an abysmal piece of shit that should never
have seen the roads of anywhere on this fair planet we inhabit. How
BL/Austin/Rover ever thought they could confidently sell them
successfully against competition like the Escort, Astra and several
Japanese cars is beyond me. The only people you ever saw driving them
were old gimmers who didn't have a local Volvo dealer to buy a 340
from. She bought hers because it was the first car she found that she
could strap three child seats across the back seat. I showed her
several decent cars that would have done the same thing and not given
    anywhere near as much trouble.

It served one purpose well - when I was bored I would sit outside and
    watch it rust.

I made her sell it and bought a Rover 216SLi to replace it - she blew
that up after I left her.

    They were shit.

The one my ex had was fucking excrutiatingly uncomfortable, gutless,
foul handling and not a patch on anything made by Ford or Vauxhall. The
interior was cheap and nasty, the body rusted to **** as soon as winter
arrived and the mechanicals would have been called outdated by Noah.

There's some rough buggers in Yarm, nearly got my face rearranged

The electronically-controlled, dual-mode four-speed unit in the Espace was
like that. The shonky old 3-speed Chrysler A727 Torqueflite in the Rangie,
OTOH, seemed to know exactly what I wanted, when I wanted it etc. Utterly
biddable. It was like Jeeves to my Wooster from a driving POV.

*I* like autos. A lot. In fact, it's very unlikely I will ever buy
another car with a manual box again.

So, you are clearly wrong, and the Monotreme and I are the only ones[1]
who will go to Heaven. So there.

    [1] Apart from the requisite
    fit-nymphomaniacs-who-like-to-cook-and-brew-decent-beer without whom it
    wouldn't be Heaven, obviously.

  15. An auto has its place.
I would have expected you to be more adept at adapting your inputs to
the nuances of the vehicle, tbh.

    Me too.

Don't think I'll ever voluntarily go back to a manual as a daily driver
    again.

Still prefer manuals in a 'fun' car, but not for daily use.

I still hate slush-boxes with a passion, although the idea of
clutch-free driving in town has always appealed, particularly when
injured. With a big enough engine, like a 5.7 Hemi, they're not too
bad, as you really don't need to care what gear you're in, so even an
unplanned downshift isn't an issue, but they still suffer the
rubber-band effectt hat I hate so much.

But I have to say I'm _totally_ in love with the DSG. Leave it in
drive and it pulls away like a manual and chenges so smoothly you
can't feel it. Put it in manual and it gives you complete control,
inclugin the ability to hold it in top gear all the way down to
1000rpm, even when you give it some gas. The additional feature when
pushing the pedal to the metal of it changing all the way down to 2nd
or 3rd, as appropriate, is quite nice too.
I shudder to think what sort of heaven you two would end up in, but am
very pleased to hear that no-one else will have to share it with you.

AOL, apart from maybe a summer weekend toy. Autos are just *so* much
nicer in town or motorway snarl ups.
