I don't think this is in the FAQ but if it is, my apologies.

I've been riding around on my little 125 for a while now (champion fun
    - did the CBT and couldn't wait to get on the road!) and have to go
abroad for a short business trip soon. I'd ideally like to ride to the
airport (I can safely carry what little I need to take with me), and I
understand parking is free for motorbikes at the airport (sound as a
    pound).

My question is: is it safe to leave my helmet attached to my bike
(which I'd rather do) or is it a better idea to take my helmet with me
through the detectors - and if I do take it with me, will people point
& stare at me and small children run away to find their mothers etc...
(actually, this happens at the moment anyway)

    Any opinions gratefully recieved.

    Thanks,

    Matt

I've seen it done. *I* wouldn't do it, because the helmet will get
soaked if it rains/pissed on by dogs/possibly just stolen.
ICBR, but I don't think they will let you take a helmet onto a plan as
    hand luggage any more.

I often fly out of Heathrow Terminal 1. There's a couple of (free) bike
parks on the arrivals level. Lots of people secure their helmets to
their bikes, some their jackets also. I'd reckon it's pretty safe if
your out for a day or so. If off for longer than that I'd not take a
    bike to the airport.

Personally I just chuck the helmet in one of the panniers, the boots in
another and the jacket and trousers in the top box. Gives me an excuse
to get changed in public and a greater excuse to 'forget' to wear
    underwear.

I'm tempted to respond with whoosh here.

I'm assuming the 'snigger' is because I said "I fly out of Heathrow"
which you've visualised as me claiming to physically fly. If that's the
case then I must be a plane and hence the "whoosh" noise.

    Or something like that.

I carried my lid as hand luggage on a BA flight to Hong Kong last month,
I got some odd looks but I just said it was in case we crashed.

    heh.

Cool - I thought it might have been on the post-9/11 list of silly
    things you can't take on[1].

[1] no knitting needles, but fountain pens are OK...

At Terminal one, in the BA Check in area, they have a perspex dump bin
that all of the 'unsuitable' stuff gets dumped in.

It's staggering some of the stuff people try to take on planes- fucking
big knifes, wall paper scissors, screwdrivers, medical (looking) clamps
    etc.

Your point about fountain pens is spot on, I thing I could kill someone
by stabbing them in the eye with a fountain pen but I'm buggered if I
could do much damage with a set of nail clippers; I suppose I could try
to raggedly circumcise someone or cut into a cuticle but that's about
    it.

You think some of that stuff might not be planted?

    What, in the dump bin?

No, I use the terminal generally at least once a week and have seen it
    almost empty. I've also asked...

  15. Yeah, I got it after I posted.

Do they give numbers for being whooshed by a whoosh?

Blimey... I thought most of it was put in by the officials, to make people
    feel safer.

Staggering. More to the point it's apparently destroyed. Pity really
'cos I've seen some good stuff in that bin...

  18. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
If they were really trying to be useful, there would be a postbox next
to the desk which the unlucky traveller could use. A lot of that stuff
could be posted on rather than dumped.

That'd put the bastard security wankers' gas at a peep.

That was the setting my dear old mum used to run the gas fire at, but
only if she had guests. I didn't count as a guest.
