New DPS unmarked cars

  1. i don't remember if i posted this here or not. it can't hurt if i did
and it needs to be posted if i didn't.

This is from one of my motorcycle lists:
    *********

I know that nobody who is on this list would typically break any
traffic laws, unless we were trying to avoid some old codger who
    shouldn't be driving anymore
: ) But I came upon a different type of DPS car yesterday. DPS=State
Troopers, for those not from here. I emailed Terry when I got home
and he had heard that they had ordered some Chrysler 300's with hemis
for pursuit vehicles. Now, I've seen lots of different cars over the
years that they have used at different times, like the Mustangs,
camaros and the Ford pickups. But this car wasn't painted black and
white, it is silver. No marking at all. No visible lights. The
taillights flash alternately and the front lights are very well
hidden in the grill, until he turns them on. ( He had somebody else
pulled over). But this car would cause no alarm if you saw it on the
side of the road, except maybe your radar detector. So, if your
coming through Texas be careful. These cars look like any other car
    out there.

  3. back in the mid 70s, i was on my way home on a either a christmas or new
years eve, i forget which one exactly, but stopped by a local area where
CB'ers used to hang out to say happy holidaze to my radio pals. along
with the other folks there was an HPD officer with a big bottle of
bourbon and a semi-auto rifle in his squad car. i said my howdees and
left after a brief period but it was an image that has stuck with me.

that said, i do know some really really good officers and prosecutors
with HPD, state and federal organizations for whom i have done forensic
work on a number of different cases. it's like any other segment of the
general public. there will always be some idiots in every crowd.
unfortunately, some crowds are armed and the percentage of idiots still
applies despite best efforts to eliminate them. very simply, don't piss
off an officer for a very long list of reasons and running is a good way
to get them seriously pissed at you in a hurry.

that's not to say the k-mart and james coney island mass arrests of a
few years ago were legitimate* and there are loads of other things to
complain about with enforcement. ultimately, after a point the street
is just not the place to make your argument. as the old saying goes "you
can beat the rap, but you can't beat the ride". consequently, if the
decision has been made, take the ticket and move on. if it comes to
arguing, that comes later in front of a judge or negotiating with the
lawyers well away from the heat of the moment of a traffic stop. in my
experience, if you are cool with the police they will generally be cool
with you and if you don't give them a reason to be a hard case, they
won't. if they aren't being professional, then you especially need to
stay cool and it will come out in the wash later on.

*those who stayed cool during their arrest were let go, charges dropped
and their records cleared. some of them sued the city and won
substantial awards. the offending officers were drummed out of the
    department.

  5. you blend in and disappear more easily when sticking with traffic flow.
it's when you stand out that you tend to get nailed by john law.
speeding, zigging in and out to pass, wheelies at 70 mph, so on...

blending in is a variation of the Jedi mind trick:
