They're not badly priced at all, are they Would a convertible be considered passe? -- Dan L http://thebikeshed.spaces.live.com/ 1996 Kawasaki ZR1100 Zephyr BOTAFOT #140 (KotL 2005/6/7) X-FOT#000 DIAABTCOD #26 BOMB#18 (slow) OMF#11
Heh, the S2000 had entered my radar, but the finance committe was not going anywhere near that, oh no... The new Civic front elevation is just plain fucking weird, makes me think of cyclops. -- Dan L http://thebikeshed.spaces.live.com/ 1996 Kawasaki ZR1100 Zephyr BOTAFOT #140 (KotL 2005/6/7) X-FOT#000 DIAABTCOD #26 BOMB#18 (slow) OMF#11
The new Jetta seems (to me) better proportioned than the Passat. I've had bad experience with FIAT diesel in the past, plus FIAT electrics and FIAT's non existant customer service dept (utter shower of cunts). As a result of my (well, my comapny's) experiences with a Scudu van, Fulton leasing withdrew it from their list of vehicles. Well, yes, but GM buy the engine in and mate it with their own ECU etc. (Fiat do the same with the GM 1.9 and 2lt petrol lumps, essentially - although Fiat and Alfa fit their own heads to the block, as I recall) YKIMS. A bit large, though, IMHO. But I wouldn't say no.
If I got one it would be via a Mazda main dealer. I have only tried the 2.0 and found it to be most certainly adequate, although I did prefer the autobox. The 2.7 offers only a 1 second advantage in terms of 0-60, although I am told the mid range is quite impressive. The 2.7 does not appeal as the fuel consumption is shite, although having said that, if the right one came along, at the right price, with a prevailing wind etc... I reckon my total will be around 25K, with around 19K pure business mileage. Indeed. The current Accent ticks several boxes, and is a complete hoot to drive, particularly around town, as oncoming trafic just knows you really do not give a ****. It is a bit stretched on long runs though, in fact at above 80mph one's hands are a mere blur on the wheel. -- Dan L http://thebikeshed.spaces.live.com/ 1996 Kawasaki ZR1100 Zephyr BOTAFOT #140 (KotL 2005/6/7) X-FOT#000 DIAABTCOD #26 BOMB#18 (slow) OMF#11

[..] Worth looking at, they aren't auto, and you'd probably have to go slightly older, but they are a solid buy. Yes, I think I do.
Hmm, not a convertible methinks I had an MG Midget when I was 19. I assume that convertible roofs have advanced somewhat since then. Too right. When the subject of cars came up today my bloody wife asked if I intended selling the bike. It was a simple 2 word answer. Tht's the problem, I am not really sure what I want, but I am quite sure about what I don't want. It's like buying shoes really, takes me weeks, then I get the pissed ripped over my eventual purchase. -- Dan L http://thebikeshed.spaces.live.com/ 1996 Kawasaki ZR1100 Zephyr BOTAFOT #140 (KotL 2005/6/7) X-FOT#000 DIAABTCOD #26 BOMB#18 (slow) OMF#11
SteveH banged the rocks together and said: Well you do seem a bit paranoid about the subject, as if you had a bad experience and something seized up solid years ago. My experience shows the opposite. Hence why I mentioned dodgy oil level senders. I've had one in an Astra, but that went the other way and said it was low when it was fine. Have you ever noticed the oil level has dropped?
Sorry, that was a bit unclear - I was talking about the servicing, not the purchase. I have had and still have several rotary-engined Mazdas and from experience they're better looked after by a specialist. Fair enough, that's why I asked about the mileage you'd be doing. Hmm. Depending on the town/motorway mix you may not want a rotary. Unless you go mental on A- and B-roads they're OK fuel-consumptionwise IMHO but in town they develop interesting drinking habits. Well, I was thinking that you could get something nice and a bit older, save on the depreciation and chuck the difference in the tank...
That's simply not true though. And IIRC ( I can't be arsed to check) you have them with a host of others not including Bear. Not that I read them mind.
Dan L banged the rocks together and said: What about a s/h Lexus? Is 22 odd mpg going to be that different from a Jag X type? So why do people ask for an Audi as a company car, when a BM is in the offing? I just see them as a VW with a bit more refinement.
Interesting, I am near Oxford, but are unaware of any independant specialists nearby. I reckon the 2.0 would be adequate. On the whole I am quite steady, albeit prone to bouts of lunacy. My commute is duar carriageway mostly, locally is all town / A road stuff. London runs are motorway. 'tis a thought. I don't mind shite old (interesting) cars which are reliable but ultimately disposeable, but am not really interested in fixing the bloody thing every weekend. -- Dan L http://thebikeshed.spaces.live.com/ 1996 Kawasaki ZR1100 Zephyr BOTAFOT #140 (KotL 2005/6/7) X-FOT#000 DIAABTCOD #26 BOMB#18 (slow) OMF#11

The mother in law reckons she hasn't had any problems with hers, which is a good thing, 'cos she reckoned the hardtop wasn't worth the money when she ordered the car. (You could get one half RRP if ordered with a car at the time). IME, ragtops are a bit hit and miss - I'll find out what the CCs are like when we go away in the autumn, 'cos I've hired a 307 or Megane CC.
