New cameras on A77

They've been digging on the island of the A77 at the Dutch House
Roundabout for a couple of weeks now with no sign of what they were doing.
This morning, two new poles with cameras have appeared.

The poles are blue [1] fancy victorian style that stretch over both
carriageways. The cameras are small and square, like you see on the
motorway, and yellow. They also have two smaller yellow boxes either
side. Are these some kind of sensor?

Any idea what these cameras are? I don't know if they are just the
traffic monitoring type. They seem awfully prominiently placed for that.

[1]The colour of the pole is probably not relevant.

That's them, fuckers. Just as well I toddled by them in my SO
Polo at 60 this morning. The positioning of them is weird. They're very
close to where you would need to be seriously thinking about slowing for
the roundabout anyway when travelling southbound. What's the range of
    them?

Guess I'll just saving blasting past them on the bike :) Once it's dried
    out.

    SPECS.

They occur paired, taking a pic of each vehilce as it goes under the
first, then another pic at the other end and timing in between so as
to calculate average speed over distance. Their appearance *will*
drop speeds between the cameras to the posted limit IME, but are only
advisory for bikes as they are invariably facing the front of the
    vehicle.

The "yellow boxes" either side (referred to in the OP) house IR
    emitters, I believe.

But you being a Northantsy type know all about them, eh?

Its slowed the a428 down no end but i was unsure how they could read your
numberplate in the dark. You can't help thinking that the same thing on a
wider scale would virtually eliminate speeding.

No, and remember where you saw it first!

The world's governments have to reduce carbon dioxide and a load of
other pollutional crap, right? Even more so in the future and this is
the start of them doing it. Very soon you won't be able to travel more
than 50mph anywhere so car manufacturers will stop producing cars that
will go much faster and so reducing pollution. Everyone concerned gets a
pat on the back. The only downside to this is that speed limits will
come down further because generation of revenue will plummet.

    IMO.

Not necessarily. From the propaganda I have been getting recently from
the media it seems that reducing domestic energy consumption is the
thing where early gains can best be made. Thus if they said that lower
speed limits were important for energy saving porpoises they would leave
themselves open to public ridicule and no politician would do that would
    they?

HA! This is what get me! Right, listen.. "Environmenally friendly"
electric cars are supposed to be environmentally friendly, right? Well
how the **** are you supposed to power them, Scotch mist? The energy to
make them go has got to come from somewhere and if it isn't from
petroleum spirit I'm guessing you need an energy source (such as it is
in current available to the public sources) like a plug in the wall
electricity charger. So, if you're not burning petrol, you're burning
other stuff (and potentially a staggering devastation to the
environment) so the power has to come from somewhere.

You can still speed in a battery powered car but I've never heard of
such a thing. Maybe people that go in for that sort of thing are the
Citroen 2CV drivers of old and their ilk.
