Well you wouldn't, would you ? You'd be haggling about how much extra
to throw in a set of panniers or some such. It would be absolutely the
*last* thing I'd think to ask - it's up there with "does it come with
tyres or a toolkit"(1) in the set of assumed parameters for a new
    bike.

I do recall some moaning many years ago about how one manufacturer
decided toolkits were an unneccessary impost on their cost of
production - might have been one of the Italians, I expect to see
sufficient spanners and allen keys and etc to get me out of trouble to
be in a small pouch under the seat as well.

On the subject of keys, for motorcycles, I have a vague feeling that
Honda in Japan used to have a system of "key" cards.

I think it was for their NSR250s, and there were various parameters
    coded into the cards.

You could get the full-power street card, some lower powered street
versions, with varying degrees of limits, and also a race-only card,
which gave max power, but no road-going stuff, like blinkers, would work.

    Am I making this up?

Once upon a time, in a previous job, I bought 6 Toyota Coronas, which came
with a bottle of Scotch for me :)-)).The crappy tyres that came with them
went square if parked in a cold spot overnight, so for the first km or so it
went bumpity bump till the tyres warmed up and became round again. The
dealer seemed to think I should take this up with Dunlop. I pointed out to
him that he supplied the tyres, not Dunlop, and that if anyone was going to
talk to Dunlop it was going to be him. He did, and all 30 tyres were
    replaced.

Yes, it does come with tyres.

Fogot to say that the dealer baulked at first, but then I told him that my
six were part of about 180 we had bought nationwide that year.

    Too late!!

New R1200RT, 1 real key, 1 thin black plastic key like thing. Still
fits panniers as well as ignition. But tool kit is ... less than
encouraging. Answer when asked 'but you have 24x7 roadside assist :)

If you're considering the purchase of a brand new BMW, not renowned as a
budget motorcycle, why wouldn't you just pay the extra $50 or whatever
they ask for an additional key? Are you that petty that you'd buy your
2nd choice instead, on the basis of a key?

The Trump came with a plastic connector between the keys with the number
on it, The idea being you can use that number to order more. I lost the
number but bought two new blanks from Triumph and had them ground.

The old Hogly only needed the key to lock/unlock the ignition switch.

Extra key $150.00, and the point is you dont know you are only getting one
until you pick up the bike.

Two arms and half a leg, most likely.

The thing is that it's not that expensive for them to have the key made; the
"chip" is barely worth a couple of dollars even taking into account the
custom coding required - but because they've got a monopoly on the
design/coding, they can and will charge an absolute fortune for
    replacements.

An interesting aside here... Several years ago a Merc Vito van at the
company I worked for packed it in, and the local mechanic traced the fault
to a bung ignition coil. But replacing said coil didn't fix the problem, and
we had to call the Merc mechanics to come load it onto a tow truck to take
    it away to repair.

The reason? The computer is designed to destroy itself in the event that it
determines "a situation which could place the engine at risk." Lucky it was
still covered under warranty, but you do have to wonder about the
maintenance costs when you have to replace the computer "as a matter of
course" each time something gnarly goes wrong.

  14. Definitely not one of their prettier offerings.
Note the glaring traffic violation - overtaking within the same lane.
Looks like the Australian market's simply not big enough for them to justify
custom brochures for the locals, so we put up with the Septic-directed one.

Neither of which really have any bearing on the question I was asking re
whether supplying one key really is a dealbusting situation.

In the 16 or so years I've been riding, I've only ever _needed_ a second
    key once.

Probably irrelevant, but a 2003 VW Golf comes with 2 full remote keys
with a $400 replacement suggested. The Golf is about the same price as a GS!

    2001 GSX1400 - 2 steel dumb keys.

Ask around in Europe and see if we're being had.

I don't think it's deal busting - it's the absence of knowledge that
they're deviating from the norm thats the problem... if you knew you're
down a $100 worth of key from scratch you'd include that in the
negotiations - it's not knowing and feeling gypped that sux and makes
    someone all grumpy !

Well, in answer to your question, Nev, yup, I am that petty.

To be honest, just like John, I wouldn't have asked up front, and would
have ended up a pissed-off customer.

Currently, the market place is fairly full of good motorcycles, so any
small thing which smacks of what I consider underhand dealing, would put
me right off from a deal.

I'm in a situation where I don't actually _have_ to buy a new bike, so
lack of a second key wouldn't force me to buy my second choice machine
    anyway.

When I do end up buying a new bike, I want to buy a bike which suits me,
fits me, is comfortable for me, and at a price/deal which I consider
    reasonable.

A company whose policy is to not supply a proper spare key seems to be
unreasonable, so I wouldn't buy from them.

Note, I did say "even more unlikely that my next bike will be a BM."
