I think that might be taking "traditional styling" a wee bit too far.

Different keys for steering lock and ignition..... so 1960's.

We got three keys with the RAV4, two full function and one just a key, all
    plated brass.

While I agree, and it would piss me off, it wouldn't annoy me enough
to not buy the bike I wanted, I'd probably harass the dealer to throw
in the extra key free *if* I *knew* about it beforehand.

It's more likely that I'd find out on delivery when it was too late
like you, hence I'd be a pissed off customer from day 1 and be very
willing to be niggly about correcting even the slightest fault. For
the sake of a hundred bucks cost (at most and that's assuming it has
electrickery in it) I think BMW is shooting themselves in the foot on
customer sat - PARTICULARLY given it's an adventure tourer - it's not
a supersports which is far less likely to be a long way from a dealer
in the event of an issue.
I've only bought a limited number of new bikes (mostly buy recently
second hand) but in the last 6 years - Cagiva Gilera and Yamaha(x2)
have all provided 2 keys. Most of the second hand bikes have come with
two keys as well (although I found the spare key to a bike I owned 25
years ago the other day I stored that one FAR too safely ! :)

I didn't think so either. Fug, that R is ugly, and what's with the UJM
    engine?
    Love the brochure
    http://www.motorcycles.bmw.com.au/common_content/models/motorcycles/K1200R/K1200R_brochure.pdf
"Respect", "This town ain't big enough for the both of us", "Testosterone in
your tank", "Mean streets", "Sex: Male", "Have your own way", Loved that,
shows the rider passing a chick in a 1960's Lincoln convertible, even she
looks bored, "Life is an action movie".

I think I want to puke now. Please tell them to get a new ad agency.

In the old days, before keys had inbuilt electrickery Mercs used to come
    with two "levels" of keys.

The "owners" level key opened everything, and the other level was for
opening the driver's door, and driving, but wouldn't open the boot or
    glove box, for valet-parking situations.

I don't know about new ones but Triumphs and BSAs didn't even have keys in
    the '50s.

Even Guzzis went to one key in the '90s. But now that BMW have set the
    standard for one key....
We only got one electronic and a normal key for the Renault 19 back in '94.
They wated $200 for a spare key then. The key was the only thing on the car
    that didn't fail.

Just like the 1967 230S in my shed. :)
That was pretty much standard for european cars.

Err, let me rephrase that from Guzzi went to "one key" to "same key".

Just like a current Guzzi, except you don't need to take the tank off. :)

Yup, the Jags all had it from the late 60's although the preceding
    models (like my '63 Mk2) didn't

Clearly you need a Guzzi you do!

    2 valves per head: check
    pushrods: check
    Easy to get at: check

You have to go loopframe to get one set of points though.

    (and you can't have mine!)
    Chains? Whassat?

The electrics on my Guzzis appear to be German...

Zebee, that is a bitsa, with quite a few yamaha parts. :p

My genuine Yamaha, 1978 model was the same in the 3 or 4 years previous
and had the same key for the ignition and the steering lock.

Aye, and in Scotland, most times of the year, that meant they were

Thankfully, Angie has not had the notion of an old Jag.
