about to get a new bike and wondered if any more experienced could give some
    pointers.
I do not want a sportsbike, and I want to be sat up fairly straight.
possibly a so called muscle bike would be right. But with comfort, I will
be doing at least one long hall trip, otherwise just for weekends out

    many thanks

Our hall is quite long but we just use roller skates.

What's your budget? How much riding experience do you have? Do you have a
licence? Will you get insurance (do you have any NCB, a garage, etc.)?

Come on, give us a clue.

The Gixxer thou is the new tourer. Actually it tours quite well.

I believe the butler does too (although he finds a skateboard rather
more in keeping with his stately demeanour), however the rather young
and trendy footman has been known to utilise rollerblades. The junior
parlourmaids, I understand, are somewhat miffed as they have to work
quite hard to polish out the wheelmarks from the parquet.

Pipped by the Flying Dutchman - much like being overtaken by Spete.

I read somewhere that Scott actually pressurised Oates to take the
walk, you know: it wasn't really a grand gesture by Oates, Scott
effectively made him do it for the benefit of the others.

I've just read a similar thing in a biog of Oates oddly enough. Though with
bones literally poking out of his feet he was probably glad to avoid any
more sledge pulling. Scott's expedition abilities can perhaps best be
summarised by the fact that when their bodies were found there were still
many kilos of rock samples on the sledges.

That biography of Scott apparently played fast and loose with the
    facts.

    Big Trailee?
I can recommend them as both fun and comfy.

So add Varadero, Caponord(if Aprilia get themselves sorted), Tiger, V
    Strom/KLV, R1xxxGS, to your list.

Also a lot of people seem to like the Fazer Thou.

Indeed. Sir Randolph Fiennes did a good article recently in /The
Independent/ IIRC. I think he may be doing a biography of Scott himself.

So the answer is - find a bike to take me to the pole, dump my pillion, make
the pillion out to be a hero, and freeze to death.
    or am i missing something

only here can one thread lead to another, but thanks, very helpful.
I'm now going to pose the same question on the anyone want to be a hero and
do something stupid group, biscuits included
    lol

First off, could you please post at the bottom? It's the way things are
done round here and people get ticked off if you top-post.

Secondly I don't think you've given us enough information about yourself and
your requirements to get a sensible answer from anyone.

Obviously there's one answer is you've got 15k to spend and have been riding
20 years and another altogether if your total budget is 200 quid and you've
    only got a moped licence.

    No, it does it everywhere.

It would be handy, as has been suggested, if you could sketch out your
intended use, limitations (financial, disabilities, type of use,
experience etc) so that the length of your particular piece of string
    may be more accurately assessed.

Placing your replies at the bottom - below the text to which you are
replying - while snipping sigs and trimming out irrelevant text would
    assist you in your quest.
