New battery, new life

Got me new battery for the Trident on Wednesday. It's exactly the same
make (Yuasa) and model (forget) as the old one, though the box had Honda
printed on it. Turns the engine over very nicely now. I hadn't realised
how knackered the old battery was. In fact when I last used the old
one (Wednesday evening, on the way to collect the new one) it sounded
like it was about to give up altogether and only just got the bike started.
I'm a happy bunny again for only 34 quid.

There's a lot of this about. I must go and fit the new battery to the
    Daytona.

I bought one of those,"Optimate" chargers,
    http://www.mdsbattery.co.uk/shop/productprofile.asp?ProductGroupID=1039
like,"Ronseal" it actually does what it says on the box :p
Brought back a half dead neglected battery that I got with me bike as
    a spare.Running that battery now =)
Bit pricey but it does the biz.

Thus spake Shep© unto the assembled multitudes:
Indeed. I've had an Optimate for about the last 7 years and it certainly
does the job. The chap in the shop where I bought my new battery said that
using one was why my old battery lasted for 5 years. What I find a bit
odd, though, is that if I connect it up immediately after putting the bike
away after a run, the Optimate's red light comes on (indicating a lost
connection or dead battery). But if I leave it for 20 minutes or so
before connecting, the amber 'charging' light comes on as normal. Do they
    all do that, sir?

I've not had that but I suspect(And as a qualified electronics
engineer among other things) that the excellent advanced circuit
detection in the device is using a,"Pulse Cycle" checking system that
is allowing time for any fault diagnosis of attached battery and
    itself :p
    PS
7 years!Could just need an accurate hit with a hammer<grin>(Joke).

Thus spake Shep© unto the assembled multitudes:
<ahem> it's always done it, sir. It often used to indicate red after
being left running for a few days but I determined that the connectors
weren't very good and would sometimes go open circuit, and I bought and
fitted new ones which have never misbehaved.

I just wondered if the battery is in some kind of 'hyper' state immediately
after a run, and that confuses the Optimate. That's my, er, highly
    technical evaluation, anyway :)
I've done pretty well, then! Even had the thing fall off the shelf a few
    times.

If it's still doing the job then it enjoy as that's a good piece of
kit running for 7 years.Hope I get that out of mine not to mention the
extended life the device adds to batteries thus saving it's initial
    high cost :)

I've even used mine to top up the car battery, even though it's not rated
    for 35Ah capacities AFAIK.

Every now and then some one makes a great piece of kit :p
    Here's another one,
    http://www.carbtune.com/
Never balanced carbs before in my life till a month ago but needed
to.Again slightly high cost but it's the"Dog's Danglies" and have
re-couped initial cost by doing some Bikes for a Tenner where the
shops charge £35/45 for the job :p
