Relax Pip, even if I "settle down" I can't actually see myself getting
    married.

Sounds more like your definition of "paying for it" varies from mine.

I've been commuting in khakis, trainers and a tshirt (plus lid) over
the last few days. Made the mistake of riding to docklands in full
kit (well, as full as I ever bother with) on Monday and sweated my
    bollocks off.

Occasionally I wear some cycling gloves as a concession to "safety".
There's a nice cooling breeze at about a ton ;)

You're all mad. Put full leathes on and sweat like God intended you to. Get
to destination and drink lots of water. It's like travelling AND detoxifying
    at the same time.

I've never understood the trainers part of this package. If I ride in
low shoes like that I always find the wind around my ankles,
particularly with flapping trouser legs, particularly uncomfortable.

Then again, I only wear 'trainers' for sports activities anyway.
I cam in ithis morning with bike boots, Levis and old leather jacket.
Fine, it was, although this afternoon it'll be over 30 degrees (~90 in
old money) so I may have to leave the jacket partially unzipped.
I _never_ ride without gloves. Lightweight summer ones are no problem
anyway, and I really don't want to be sliding down the road, even from
a 2 mph spill, with no gloves on.

And don't forget to wear a fleece over the top, refuse all offers of
water during the day and hit the beer heavily when you get there, eh?

LOL, those wide flares really are impractical aren't they?

And then knock yourself sparko on the cistern while blacking out. It's as
    simple as it sounds :)

don't ware flares then. I do usually wear bike boots and change at
work, but only to stop my good trainers getting manked up.
gloves and a helmet is bare minimum for me, but I don't see why people
should wear gloves if they don't want to - particularly around town. I
saw a courier a few minutes ago[1] with a pair of bike gloves that
he'd cut the ends of the fingers off - I suppose it makes paperwork
    easier.

[1] I also saw a CG125 with a "real bike" style carbon fiber end can -
it actually sounded great - like a supermoto.

Porl bored us all completely to death with wittery prose along the
    lines of:
Heh. I just did a small trip (about 10km) to a shop this lunchtime and
sweated my nuts off. I had my regular kit on. No leathers. I'd hate to
think what it have been like with leathers on.

You need to ride out of town a bit more. My trip to and from work
isn't too bad, even with leathers, although as I mentioned up there
I'm currently not bothering with leather trousers.

How hot is Paris atm? It's about 32degC here, which is nice (in the
evenings, by the pool with a cold beer or three :)).

I've just checked in the co-cage outside and it says 34?C. The problem
with the bike, is that when I stop a traffic lights, the heat of the
    engine doesn't help at all...
