  1. Offer-smite brought a new nc10 into the office yesterday, so I
unpacked it for him and checked that it would boot ubuntu off my USB stick.
Took a ruler to it, and its keyboard is 22 cm across, compared to my
Medion (a.k.a. MSI Wind, Advent, etc) which is 22.5. Surprisingly its
display is a few mm wider than mine (I'd have thought they all used the same
panel, but apparently not). First impression was that my touch-pad is
    better than his, too.

Where did you get it at that price? I've been reading that Asda are
doing them for that price, but haven't seen on-line.

    Thanks

We don't pay VAT in the channel islands. I bought it from Amazon.co.uk
    and got free shipping.

:) Unfortunately, to escape VAT it has to be a /permanent/ export!

Thank you! Now I have reason to get a new mobo and multicore processor:
2.5 hours to transcode a 1.5 hour film! Time to say goodbye to the Athlon
3200+? It's been a good and faithful servant and done everything I needed
    - until now, you bastard :)

Oh and it's not me with bloatware, mine's running ubuntu UMPC edition.

  7. Synaptics, I believe. It doesn't seem to have the shortcomings
I've seen mentioned for the alternative, and I might have seen a Synaptics
    driver in my poking around...

It is Dogs way of telling you to get an I7, my poorly aged Q6600 will
rip a DVD (using DVD::Rip) in about 45 minutes. Ubuntu is probably the
one-true-path, but I'm a bit of a SUSE whore these days, in as much as I
can get it to do what I want. Apart from the sound system, ALSA sucks.
