    Me too , Brutus !

    The Suzook would be it.
I just had this conversation with my Son 1 hour ago.
My battle is going to be harder than this though cuz he thinks his squid friends that say an
R6 is a great beginners bike know more than dumb ole only 30 years exterience Dad.

I think the Ducati has a higher percentage of creating a one-bike-and-out
rider....meaning that the probability of it leaving you stranded, the high maintanance cost
and the need to be part ape to clutch around town for any extended period of time would
turn a new rider off to motorcycling in a short period of time.

    Hi,

I'm considering the following bike as my first bike:
2002 Ducati Monster 750 i.e. Dark. All black, 5,100 miles
8 months of the 2 year warranty remaining.

    Upgrades, include:
    - Remus Grand Prix aluminum cans
    - Carbon fiber heat shields
    - Performance air filter
    - Kickstand ignition cutoff
    - Fender eliminator Fairing (Dark)
    - Adjustable clutch lever
    - Carbon Fiber tank protector

the seller is asking for $6000. Since I've never owned a bike, i
wanted to ask the general community on their comments on this
    purchase....

    TIA.

  3. I bought a new R1 in 2000, that was my first bike - have done 27,000 miles
on it since and it never missed a beat - great engine, great gearbox - a bit
    fast for some though.

The Monster 750 isn't exactly a superbike. At 62 hp and 400lbs its probably
on the upper end of what I would suggest on a starter bike as far as
power/weight ratio, but its a very ridable bike with no huge surprises. I
would worry about maintainance costs and parts when you drop it though. In
my opinion, a beginner can't go wrong with a used EX500. Ride the hell out
of it for a year and then sell it for what you paid for it. That way you'll
have the skills needed to handle more power and weight.

Are you asking for market value and re-sale experience, or are you asking
about this being your first bike? That will help with answers.

good plan, buy a piece of shit ducati for your first bike... Yeah..
    definitely, do that.

Especially since my dork buddy bought a Ducati ST4 for $3000 because the guy
wanted to unload the broke dick POS. Friggin thing froze in 5th gear on the
    test ride.... dork.

  7. I've no idea what US values are, but I can advise on the bike, since my
    SS has the same engine.

The two-valve 750 lump is probably the best of all the old air-cooled
lumps. Stronger than the 900, more powerful than the 600. A tough,
    reliable lump.

Whether a Monster is ideal as a first bike..... I'd say not.

The Monster 750 is a pretty good bike. Good for street riding, enough power
maybe too much for a newbie without some throttle restraint. The add-ons
don't mean a whole lot although the cans will make it sound cool. The only
bad part about it being a starter is when you tip it over the parts are
going to cost a bit to replace. Regular maintenance will cost you about
twice what an equivalent Japanese bike will.

Then again he can get that American sportbike which cost less to
    maintain then the Japanese bike.

I was looking at Buells yesterday since the dealer is right next to the
Yamaha/Suz/Duc dealer. I like em somewhat and I know they're fun to ride.
But they will never match the style of a Ducati. I like all motorcycles in
some regard but don't fsck with Italians when it comes to style. I noticed
the BMW/Aprilia dealer is moving in right between them too, pretty cool.

I was speaking of the old tube framed Buells although i am fond of the
new ones as well. As cramped as they may be. The thing is you can
find an old Cyclone for for 3000.00. You can find a 2002 Cyclone for
    4000.00. to 5000.00

    Umm,

I just got a monster 620 as first bike in about 20 yrs, and thoroughly enjoy
it. Power is smooth, looks and sounds great, and I don't think that dropping
one would be that expensive seeing as there's no plastic, no rads etc.. I
can easily afford the insurance and don't find it expensive
Clutch is operated on two fingers, not heavy at all. I don't understand not
recommending one as a first bike, as long as the price is right.
