I've had my gixxer 1000 for almost 4 years now. Due to the
steady slyness of cops, PeakOil, Adelaide Hills bumpy roads,
my aging back and knees, the inability to kane down the many
back/cop free roads in the hills.. I'm thinking about getting rid
of her and getting something that I can ride on the dirt as well.
.. but I want it to be a road bike.. and I want something that
will kane down the most bumpest/pot holed bitamen goat track
(but i want a road bike). I want to do wheelies (and it has to be
a road bike.. with road tyres, big arse motor and stuff)..

    So, I was thinking this---

I would prefer a twin... but, such is life. Does anyone know if
KTM measures power from the back wheel or the crank ?

Is there any similar style bikes people could recommend for
a gixxer rider. Power to weight is obivously very important to
me.. but, i don't want to have to be filling it up every 2 days.

I figure that a Motard is a great fusion. Advice appreciated ;)

    cheers

A Motad isnt a road bike, its a chookchaser with road tires.

    YMMV.

They don't list it yet, but KTM have started making a 950SM LC8. Failing
that, what's wrong with the Superduke? OK, so it's got the teensy 15L
    tank and 180km range...

  4. Two Japanese (and therefore cheaper) options are: Suzuki DRZ400SM,
Yamaha XT660X (my personal favourite but it was out of my price range).
Unless you have your heart set on a Keep Throwing Money. Here's a
twin from Aprilia, but I suspect a deal of patience will be required if
you decide you want one of these

  5. You aren't getting scared of the cops in your old age are you Jason? :p

Forget the KTM. I went on a spirited ride with someone riding a new one and
after 700k's of riding in one day it sounded very ordinary.

The suzuki V-Strom is the go aparently.

    Hi All,

Yeah.. I did notice the 950 SM. It looks great (I want one)... but it
looks like it will be prone to the gixxers problem-- filling her up
every 1 to 2 days... and excessive speeds. Fuel here next year
will be at $2/litre easy. 40-50 bucks to fill the gixxer with
premium, multiply that by about 4-5 fills per week in the summer.

Yeah Rob, I am getting scaredy of cops. Today, coming out of
Checkers Hill road, I "popped" a 1st gear wheel stand out of the
intersection. A few seconds later inkind, one of the local cuntsables
"pops up" over the crest (after I had slowed down to 100). I was lucky
    (like the other million times).

You can't get away with shit like that anymore. The law has zero
tolerance. Riders make first page news here from doing what I
    would call mediocre speeds.

When I was in Darwin, I used to laugh at all the "southerns" in this
group, when I would get let off for doing 100km over the limit and
some poor ****stain in Victoria would get fined for doing 5km over the
limit. (Rob, you got let off once completely bent out of your brain by
that Women copper who fancied you. Peter, you got let off by an
    ex-school friend -- and that's Darwin for you !).

**** I don't want to sell the gixxer. I love the gixxer in summer
time-- nailing it through the windy back roads at night... but, It's
an expensive, very high maintenance, seasonal licence
loosing machine that's not practical in Adelaide.

    Cheers

    Hi Lemmiwinks

    I won't settle for anything less than a 600 ;)

Thanks anyway. The aprilia bike looks pretty
cool. I want to give a european bike a go this
    time around.

... Or I could just keep the gixxer for another
year and see how bad the cops and fuel
    prices get.

No one has mentioned the Funduro range so far... not much of a dirt bike, but
nicer in the dirt than most road bikes; and not much of a road bike, but
better on the road than most dirt bikes. I have friends who have done 100,000
+ on F650s, and they still love them to bits.
    You need more bikes.

I bumped into a bloke last night who's about to set off on the trip of a
lifetime: a loop of South America, up the Pan American Highway to Alaska,
and a few detours (such as Machu Picchu[1]). He reckons it will take him a
year, well over 20,000km. On a Scarver.

Gary (new Scarver looking more smick than ever)
